Are there are other freshmen (as in the 2006-2007 school year) here, or am I all by my lonesome?

I just finished calculating my GPA with my current four-year plan (assuming I make all A's, which are 97 and above at my school), and (weighted) it's still a little less than last year's valedictorian. Not that I'd ever achieve that, but it's rather sad that I don't even have a chance. The four years of orchestra on my schedule is hurting me; it's a regulars course (as far as I know), but I just don't want to give it up.

How's everyone else's scheduling coming along?

You calculated your gpa with your * PROJECTED* grades. Wow, do you have literally no life?

Not projected. That's just the max. GPA I can get with my current schedule. My true GPA with be undoubtably lower. It doesn't take that long anyways... three minutes tops.

when I started High School I didnt even know what gpa was

I projected my GPA to be 4.0 when I was a freshman.

I was proud of myself when I graduated with a little less than half of that.

"I projected my GPA to be 4.0 when I was a freshman.

I was proud of myself when I graduated with a little less than half of that."

Hence "My true GPA with be undoubtably lower."

At least you'll have an early start on all this college stuff!

yeah my worst grades came fresh year. most of the other top kids BEST grades came then so its sad...

You have no life. I did the exact same thing as you. :).
I was in litterally the exact same situation as you. I am in the running for Valedictorian. What I did to fix the problem: ask your conductor about auditing. Auditing means that you take orchestra during your lunch hour. It will not contribute to your GPA, you will just get a P/F if it shows up on your transcript at all.

At our school, you have to try out for orchestra and get placed into one placed on your skill level. I'm not sure if that'll affect auditing or not, but I'll certainly ask for more information. Thanks!

Serendipity, where in Texas do you go to school where an A is 97 or above?

That's a ridiculous standard for an A it seems. Most schools have 90+ as an A, or like my school with a 92+ as an A.

I always thought that band, jazz, and orchestra should be ECs rather than classes, but who am I to tell.

I should rephrase that. A 4.0 is a 97 or above. Sorry for the miscommunication. Sometimes I tend to interpret 4.0 as A. Sorry, again.

That makes more sense. Thanks for the clarification.

My suggestion to you is to follow your heart. If you want to be valedictorian more than you want to play orchestra, drop orchestra. If you want to continue your music through high school, continue on with it and don't worry as much about your rank.

That's how my school is too. A 97 or above is an A while anything between 93-96 is an A-. I also go to school in Texas and will be a freshman next year.

Dang, a 97+ as an A? That's crazy! My school operates on 89.5+ as an A!!

Me too! and 94.5 and up is A+

Eh... People are smarter and harder working than you are. Once you start meeting some of these people, it all clicks into place, and you start wondering why the hell you ever wanted to be valedictorian in the first place. Either they're clearly more skilled and smarter than you are, or they just work and study (sense of responsibility + worry) that you just cannot or should not keep up with. Up until Junior/Senior year, a 4.0 is doable, IMHO, without any insane work or excellent skill (my freshman and sophomore year were way too lazy, missed a lot of GPA there by not being responsible enough), but after a while it's either a 4.0 or actually having a decent transcript. 94 is generally an A for my school, but it's amazingly teacher-dependent.

I never even knew what valedictorian was...and after I got into IB I knew there was no chance of me ever being valedictorian. Oh well.

BTW, I just remembered that I read somewhere that the you should start EC the day the leave eighth grade. Well, I haven't done anything this summer yet (I had an application to a teen volunteer program but it got lost in the mail... sucks :(). Do you think that'll matter, and can anyone recommend some good programs for the DFW area or any area in general?
