Friday afternoon with honors

We visited UF in 2006 when my S was looking at colleges. My D went with us, but we attended the general orientation, and her name wasn't listed as a participant, just as the "with family" reservation. Anyway, in order to get her name on a list as having visited UF, and because we have lot more specific questions related to things she's interested in, we were wanting to visit again. We are thinking of doing a Friday afternoon with honors this spring (she's a junior with a 4.0 u.w., so we figure honors might be an option for her). Can anyone who's attended one of these "Friday afternoon's" give me an idea what they are like? Much appreciated, thanks ... oh, and I'm wanting to set up hotel reservations. Last time I just picked out of a hat, so to speak, and we weren't thrilled. Got a Holiday Inn under renovation on the edge of campus, and it left a great deal to be desired. Any other ideas?

Thanks so much!

i like the country inn and suites right off 75 and archer. thats where we always stay when we go to gainesville and is minutes away from campus.

about the friday with honors, when i went on it i found that it was a nice way to find out about the honors program only (and dorm), but if you want to know about the university in general, you must do the general tour. since you have already done that, the friday with honors would be good to find out about the program's benefits and to answer your specific questions as a honors counselor is there in the question and answer session after the tour. you also get to see the inside of hume which is a benefit of the honors program.

I love the Country Inn and Suites. It has a wonderful breakfast, and if the room is available, I always try to get the two room suite (rather than the one-room suite, which is really a glorified hotel room). It's only about 10-20 dollars more, and worth it.

If you really want to get a taste, do the football weekend or go to a basketball game. Or get with someone your D knows that attends, and have her go to a class or two.

Orangeblue and Doubleday,

Thanks for the hotel recommendation; we've reserved a suite. Looks so much better than where we stayed before. I appreciate the info!

Anyone else actually attend one of these fridays with honors afternoons? Curious what they're like. I did one at UCF when my S decided to go there, but it was after he'd already been accepted at Burnett.

Thanks again!

My son did something with honors- not sure if it was a Friday afternoon or not. They went with H, though, so I don't know much about it. They both lived in Hume, though, and it's a nice dorm.

Do you actually believe that making sure your D is on some type of imaginary "list" they keep of applicants who visited can make a difference in an admission decision? Is visiting again just for that worth it? I'd understand if there are specific things your D didn't see that she wants to ask about, but this is a bit ridiculous. This whole thing about "expressed interest" doesn't mean turning yourselves into UF maniacs! Heck, at this point you might as well paint your house orange and blue and send it with the transcript to demonstrate your "expressed interest."

Anyway, if you're going just to refresh your memory anyway, that's fine. I stayed at a holiday inn, but it wasn't one of the best I have stayed at in the chain. It wasn't that close to campus though and we still had about a 15-20 minute drive.

Also, I'm applying to UF, but also to Burnett as well. How has your son's experience there been like so far? Thanks.

Have a great trip, but I have to agree, UF does not give any weight to having visited, and they keep no LIST of those who have formally visited. They will receive 26,000 applications. And as a state school, expressed interest and visiting are not in their equation.
