Friend (choose Stony Brook over tops/ivies)

Okay so I know that some of us (or might have friends who) chose the state flagship over a prestigious private largely because of costs. Well, imagine someone who chooses a state school over a full ride to some of the best schools in the world!

Yes, that was the case of my friend. He got accepted into the likes of MIT, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, UCLA, UCBerkeley, Cornell, NYU and Vanderbilt. Oh and he got waitlisted at Harvard and rejected from Princeton. He was able to get the fee waived every time so he applied to 20 schools or something.

He got a full ride at most these places, if not he got nearly full FA. He's from a low income family, is a minority, had near perfect stats and had a life story that must've made a great essay. Point is, he gave up all that opportunity to go to Stony Brook.

I on the other hand am not a minority, I'm from a middle class house and didn't try at all in high school (I was even a class cutter). My GPA was pretty horrendous and when I sat down to take the SAT I literally did not know what was on the test and hadn't really slept the night before.

We're attending the same school. ***

On a side note, I turned a new leaf and intend on transferring out after this semester. He's staying.

…that life story you mention may have led him to stay closer to home…there are so many reasons that you may or may not be aware of that made him decide this…

Actually, it had a lot to do with his obsession with asian girls  although I can’t comprehend why he wouldn’t go for UCLA
but you’re right - he also wanted to stay in New York

I’m so jealous of him. I didn’t even apply to those schools although I wish I did -_-

Your friend is nuts.

He’s not “nuts.” Maybe he just wants to go where he feels he would best fit in. Maybe he doesn’t want the pretension and hyper-competitiveness that you find at many top schools. Maybe he doesn’t care what his diploma says.

Flagship? Binghamton > Stony Brook.

Why did he apply to so many prestigious schools if he wasn’t going to attend them? Finances doesn’t seem to have been the reason he chose Stony Brook.

Brewer - That’s kind of debatable. Stony Brook science is way up there, but I’ll definitely hand it to binghamton for business, english, etc.

Either way the whole SUNY system is overrated in NY. Nobody knows any of them in the rest of the country.

Schrizto - yeah it had nothing to do with financial reasons. Half the schools he got into gave him 100% FA and then some.

What is nuts is that he would apply to the other schools when a Stony Brook acceptance was more likely, not that he is attending Stony Brook.

wait wha

he had free applications so he applied to a handful of local schools and the most selective schools

He probably felt like he was a better fit for Stony Brook (really liked Longueiland?) and felt he would get more personal opportunities there (assuming they have an honors program)

What I don’t get from this post, and what most people will probably be wondering is - why.

Why did your friend make that choice?

I knew someone who went to SUNY Binghamton over Columbia, because she wanted to get away from her mother. Sh… happens.

from what taggart told me, apparently he has some weird obsession with asian girls.

and if that’s actually the reason, then he definitely made the right choice. though imo, if you get into top schools and turn them down for a ■■■■■■■■ reason like that, then your spot should definitely be going to someone else anyway.

…is there a special type of azn girls at stony brook?

^ no, sb is just like 60% asian and indian, so there’s tons around

^haha yah. that was partly sarcastic ;)

Okay, Cornell then.
