In your experiences, have admissions officers at schools been friendly? As in, if you had questions about admissions policies at different schools, did they return your calls and emails? Which schools have particularly friendly admissions officers? Which schools have particularly mean admissions officers?

It depends on the INDIVIDUAL admission officer. My friend's rep at Colgate talked to her about her application before decisions were made and really was an advocate for her. She didn't end up getting in, but her connection with the rep made the process slightly less stressful.

Stanford admission officers are really really nice XD. The regional officer who presented my application personally wrote me a letter with her own thoughts (in handwriting) about my application.

Harvard admission officers are nice too but they are not too revealing about admissions other than what you can find from the admissions website.

UMiami's admissions officers are really nice and friendly. They also respond quickly by email (within a day) as opposed to Michigan State, OSU, IU and Purdue which took about a week to get a response.

Second Stanford's admissions. The regional officer was adorable and was truly interested in what you had to say when I met her. She even remembered my name when I ran into her by accident at Admit Weekend. Very impressive.

^Almost every admissions officer at a school that's 5000ish or less, will remember who they ADMITTED.

Most admissions officers are nice because it's their job to deal with the public. However, some were standouts. I thought Bucknell had a great one. Lafayette's was a little stiff. The engineering admissions officer at USC likes to lecture rather than be helpful.

The nicest Dean of Admissions that I met is at Colgate, Gary Ross. Not that the folks at my new school Wesleyan aren't wonderful, caring people. Dean Ross is just really unique.

Oklahoma State admission people have been wonderful as have the financial aid dept. They have all patiently and kindly answered many questions and emails (sometimes the email answers are the next day but it is a large school). And her admissions officer and the honors college also recognise her which is impressive considering the size of the campus. Has really reinforced the original impression of a friendly campus and made my Daughter feel welcome and wanted (and her Mom who has posed most of the financial questions ;) )

Ditto danalynne.

I sent questions via e-mail to admissions officers at each of the schools I applied to. In all cases, I received prompt and helpful responses.

Of those schools, I would say that Washington & Lee has particularly friendly, helpful, and approachable admissions officers.

This probably occured only to me but Carnegie Mellon's Admissions Officers are (The French word for shower) at best. They never returned responded to any of my emails (They weren't that desperate either, just a question about one of the their weird test score policies).

ah. so for the most part, admissions officers aren't going to ignore you or bite your head off if you email them with questions about their school.

Ok, I'm going to be a mean Admissions officer.

Prospie #1: Do you guys favor SAT or ACT.
Adcom: Go to hell kid.
Prospie #2: Walden U is my dream school, does that help my application.
Adcom: You won't get in, bwahahaha.
Prospie #3: Why should I apply to Walden in addition to Ivy League schools?
Adcom: Because we want your application fee.
Prospie #4: Do you have an Early Action or Early Decision program at Walden.
Adcom: What are your SAT scores and your gpa.
Prospie #4: Ummm, 2100 and 4.0.
Adcom: Your Early decision is NO. Now scram.

Adcoms have an incentive to be nice. It's their job to get people excited about their school.

Lol. I think WUSTL's officers are really nice. They reply to e-mails often within the same day and are pretty patient with my random questions on minute details... And there's this one receptionist who's amazing, she is so cheerful and calls everyone "sunshine"!

Mikes post made me laugh. That's probably what they are thinking sometimes!

Ditto on Gary Ross of Colgate.

He writes a personal note on every acceptance letter, referencing the student's essay, EC's etc.

When daughter notified Colgate she would be going to school elsewhere, he sent a note wishing a great 4 years at her school of choice.

Classy way to run admissions.

mikenthemaddog66's point is hilarious. In my opinion, most adcoms tend to not be too personal with the applicants. If you call them and ask them for approximate chances for example, they will tell you "apply and find out". However, they are usually friendly in notifying you about deadlines and missing materials.
