Are the people at Wesleyan friendly or snobby? If I wear Abercrombie & Hollister will I be ostracized? Will I be rejected if I'm progressive but not pro-choice for the same reasons as everyone else?

What do you think?

I wouldn't ask if I thought I knew the answer. I know that my alumni interview and the viewbook says they are, but I am hoping for an opinion that isn't working for Admissions.

it's not that extreme :)

I'm pro-life but progressive :o)

It really depends on what sort of crowd you fall into. The student body isn't as homogenous as the college guidebooks would like to make it sound... there's an overall liberal tone to the campus, but some people are truly radical and others are hardcore Democrats and others are hardcore Republicans and others have highly eclectic political viewpoints. Some students are liberal in politics only, some in social attitudes only (such as clothing styles and alternative lifestyles), some in both, some in neither.

However, as for the friendly thing: that's really what I liked most about the school. When I visited, the atmosphere just seemed... friendly. No one was out to get you. It was nice. I recommend visiting and getting a feel for the campus yourself :D

what madjoy said is true. i find it liberally eclectic (or eclectically liberal?)

i definitely agree that wesleyan is overall very VERY friendly. and never fear, you will see abercrombie jeans on many a wesleyanite bottom.

are the people at wesylean "weird" ? ... thats what the consensus at my school is for some reason

Wesleyan is probably not the best place for people who throw around the word "weird" in a careless or thoughtless manner. Partly for that reason, I wouldn't even begin to know how to answer that question; it's a very tolerant place with people from all sections of the country; it provides a variety of approaches to learning and suggests that people acquire a familiarity with all of them. For people with open minds and a serious desire to push themselves intellectually, there are only about half a dozen places like it in the whole country.

Personally, I'm pretty weird. A lot of my friends are. But there are normal people out there too, depending on what you define as normal.

stonecold23: to start off, i think you asked a valid question. i wanted to know the same thing before i came here. and when i came to visit, i was honestly a little let down. i was expecting everyone to be crazy drug-using activists, and that's just not the case. i've been surprised by how normal most of the people seem to me. i'd definitely suggest that you visit if you can, if only to reassure yourself that there are, in fact, people like yourself on the campus.

what's your definition of weird?
