Nicole, where are you transferring to?

TheCrookedOne -

I’m transferring to Wash U.

Don’t get me wrong. UTD is a great place to learn. It is steeped with opportunities to research, and the classes are challenging and thought-provoking.

That being said, though, the culture is difficult to adapt to. The campus is very young and isolated. There are very few places to get food, there aren’t many artists or musicians, the society is very conservative, it’s in the middle of suburbia, there is an awkward hierarchy based on scholarships, people are not very active in their clubs, there’s little school spirit, and most people who go there are either resentful because they got in to better schools but opted for the generous financial aid or are bitter because they are commuters.

Furthermore, the demographic is overwhelmingly Indian. While I have many Indian friends and appreciate the culture, I have a lesser social stigma attached to me as a white girl. It’s hard to be taken seriously.

I’m from the Pacific Northwest, so I come from a very different culture. I’m used to a different climate, for one. I’m also not used to being prosecuted for being a catholic. I am used to artsy and free-thinking people. Texas is different. Maybe that’s partially why I’m having trouble enjoying UTD. I just urge people to think very carefully about this decision. Hindsight is 20-20, of course, but I wish I hadn’t been so swayed by the monetary offerings.

Look at Texas Woman’s University. It is on the smaller side, has a lovely little campus in Denton, and is very affordable.

When you are researching, remember to look at their admission stats. When I went to TWU the required ACT was soooo low. Since I was going to grad school, I didn’t pay attention to that, but I should have checked it out more. The academics were underwelming.

nicole, sorry to hear your story. not terribly surprised, but it is a shame that school doesn’t have a better vibe. Texas could use it.

op, Trinity U in san antonio is supposed to be a hidden gem. idk, haven’t been there but plan to visit soon.

too, university of north texas, denton, has a pretty big fan base in dallas.

Yes, it is private, but for Biology it would be hard to beat Austin College based on your wants…Small town and school where teachers know just about everyone. I’m also a fan of TAMU-Commerce.

This thread can end. The OP was looking for advice about where to apply for fall 2013. That session has undoubtedly started by now.

I have a 2.55 GPA with a 22 ACT/SAT score. Any good texas colleges i can get into?

Look at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls. We have not visited yet but are hearing good things.

I want to go to TX State as an in state transfer, but I’m worried about my chances.
