Friends and the Residential College System

So. I know that many students say that the residential college system is the BEST thing about Rice. But I was wondering how easy it is to make friends outside of your residential college?

Very. Anyone who says that the college system is limiting and confining is a freshman or isn’t trying hard enough. Right now I’m visiting one of my best friends from Rice, who was in Brown, and while I’ve been here I’ve also seen friends who were in Will Rice, Wiess, and Martel. While my core group of friends were mostly from Lovett, I made many other friends outside of my college.

Ditto what NYskins says. My DS has a group of friends visiting this weekend that were mostly friends he met through his major.

The college system provides an easy way to get to know people quickly. Above and beyond that, you meet people through mutual friends, classes, sports, activities, clubs etc.

Echoing what the others say, it is quite easy.

How does Lovett compare to the other colleges, all residential college pride aside?

As a college or as a building?

College - All colleges are different yet similar, meaning that you love where you are because you embody the culture of the college. Lovett throws some of my favorite parties (Casino Party, Getcheroxoff etc.). College is also very social.

Building - Building is dated although it got a new HVAC system last year. Rooms are not too bad except they have very small windows. The grating covers up all light, although it is good for parties.

Summary: You will love Lovett as will everyone else at their respective colleges. Putting college pride aside is quite hard as it runs through the veins of the college. Without college pride and this “rivalry”, the colleges are little more than dorms.
