@astudent… the classes are kind of like high school, but block scheduled style. you have many choices: lectures on Monday, Wednesday, Friday … or … lectures Tuesday/wednesday classes… or certain lectures are held for several hours in one sitting on any given day. And most classes come with a discussion class, which is a smaller version with a teachers assistant going over material with you. Freshman generally take from 12-18 units through out their first year. Class times can vary. I have had some 50 minute lectures, then I have had some 1 hour and 20 minute lectures, and eventually I am going to have to take a 3 hour weekly lecture. They all vary depending on the time and day of the scheduled class. CONGRATS on getting into UCI… I love it that so many people are getting in and are so excited to go to this school! <3 Can’t wait until all you soon to be freshman get to experience college for the first time, it truly is an amazing experience.

@laweenie so UCI, as you said, has beautiful scenery, beach close by, etc etc… what i like about it? SO MANY THINGS… so, first off, cops are everywhere- which some people (and occasionally me) are like oh f-u-c-k the police, they are just trying to get me in trouble! while this is kind of true, they are also really protecting everyone in irvine and i feel REALLY safe. even sometimes, when I am walking home drunk with my girlfriends (or alone- but no one should do that) I feel safe because I see at least 3 police cars at 3am when I’m drunk, which is 3 times as much as I do inthe daylight. THUS, I would rather get arrested for underage drinking or get a DIP than get shanked, mugged, or raped on my night walk home.

I also love how everything is within walking or bus distance, which is really helpful to those who don’t have cars.

the location also, is in so cal (hopefully you know that ) so the weather is awesome! we get a little rain about 10% of the school year and the rest is just perfect mixture of weather!
Also, I know you mentioned HB, but actually Newport is much more important in a college students life… All the parties are there, the bbq’s are there, etc. And its a fun place to hang out or sometimes I like to get away and study there by myself.

YOU’RE GUNNA LOVE IT!! congrats on the acceptance!

@DAK1995 for being wait listed you should actually get a waitlist notification in the email and then you should fill out the supplement questions or essays. everything should be laid out for you! The appeal is for being rejected! I’m sorry for the confusion! Congrats on the wait list! I hope it turns out as perfect as it did for me!!!

How comfortable are you in UCI (in terms of campus life, students, studying and overall your time schedule).

I’m asking this because currently I have plans to appeal (and I know the chances for overturning rejections are really really low). However, UCI was part of my schools of interest, so I would like to get feedback ASAP.

Thanks!

I got into the Business Econ program at UCI, and would like to know if it’s worth going there for. I want Business Admin but I heard it’s hard to get into for transferring…what should I do?

How is their humanities program?

Major
UCI- undeclared
CPP- Finance
SDSU - pre finance

concerns about UCI
-classes will be too difficult
-sooooo many asians
-my sister is going there(good or bad?)

*concerns about of CPP & SDSU
-sdsu is 3 hours from home(I want to be closer)
-cpp is a commuter school
-will I be able to graduate in 4 years? or will getting the classes i want be difficult?
-are there serious students at sdsu? or is it all about the parties?

I’m having the hardest time deciding between these 3 school. UCI is the best school I got into, plus it has the UC brand name. I don’t plan on going to graduate school, so would the school i go to really effect my chances of getting a job after college? I visited UCI’s campus and it is beautiful and it’s only 1.5 hours from home, which is a plus. But the only thing holding me back is the 50% asian population. I’m not racist, but I would feel more comfortable being around people that are similar to me… I think everyone would. So please leave your input, I really need help

You shouldn’t assume that UCI will be more difficult just because of its prestige…one of my most difficult classes in college so far happened at a community college and few of the easiest happened at UCI. College is about leaving your insecurities behind and trying something new; that said, if Asian people make you feel so uncomfortable that you think it might affect you emotionally/physically, then you should probably avoid UCI. There’s just no way around it. Do you have a good relationship with your sister? I really can’t see why her being at UCI should affect your decision to attend.

I don’t know if CPP is a commuter school or not, but you should be aware that UCI also holds that reputation and for the most part, it’s true. If the lack of a (vibrant) social scene will be a problem for you, despite whatever good qualities CPP and UCI may have, SDSU is probably the best fit. Everyone knows that Cal State students are having a difficult time getting classes to graduate. You can be assured that this is not the case at UCI. While you might not always get the perfect class time, or best professor, you can definitely graduate on time (4 years) or earlier if you want to take summer school and such things. If any future Engineers are reading this, that might not be the case (sorry). While I know little about SDSU, I think it’s safe to say that there will be serious students there. Likewise, there are probably “partiers” and slackers at UCI…or anywhere in general. It shouldn’t really affect you that much IMO.

While brand name is not everything, I would consider it heavily as you do not plan on going to graduate school. Yes, I know people like to say that what you do is more important than where you go to school…ect, ect, but it’s probably best not to risk limiting your future potential because of where you chose to go to school. I’m not saying that to offend Cal State students…it’s just that you have an opportunity to go to one of the best schools in the nation…and so far it seems to be a good match for you. It’d be smart to take this chance. Lastly, if the only thing holding you back is the Asian thing, I’d advise you to just get over it You’ll find that you have more in common with the people you will meet at UCI than you may think. Good luck with your decision! I tried not to be biased for UCI but let’s be honest, you’re going to be there next year.

“but let’s be honest, you’re going to be there next year.”

@oceanpartier that made me laugh because i too believe that I am going to end up at uci, but I want to consider all my options. I am visiting both cpp and sdsu tomorrow.

Another question, I was accepted into uci with my alternate major, undeclared, my first major was business admin./finance. Should I do general ed. my first year and then declare a major my second year (maybe business economics) or would i be better off going into a cal state where I can major in finance?

You could try…honestly it really depends on how much space they have in Business Admin. after those accepted enroll…but that’s an extremely restricted major. At my orientation, they explicitly told us that we could switch into any major on the spot except Business Admin. or anything Engineering. And that was nearly 3 years ago so…it’s probably way more competitive now I’m assuming.

It would be wise to do some of the major pre-requisites for Business Admin. your first and second year (Econ, Calculus, ect)…but do have a backup plan. The success rate is something ridiculously low, like 10 change of major students every year. Business Econ. is a good alternative; seems to be similar just with a lot more math. You can even switch into the major at orientation…and apply to Business Admin. later. I really don’t know anything about business/finance…is admin. really that different from econ.? You’ll have to ask an expert. On that same note I also don’t know if going to a Cal State for finance would be advantageous…but I can tell you that if you plan to go to business school after UCI, major isn’t all that important.

@maldotcom09
what were your stats. I’m applying for business econ as well
congratz on getting in!

@YUNAYui I love UCI! And I am very comfortable here. When I say there is a place for everyone, I literally mean that once you get here you will be comfortable! I personally joined a sorority that allowed me to feel extremely comfortable, I found so many friends and my best friends because of it! My study schedule was iffy first quarter but its definitely on track now! I am more comfortable studying in a specific library- Gateway- rather than my dorm and rather than other libraries for several reasons.

Hope you get in off of the appeal!!!

@maldotcom09 I do not know much about the Business area of UCI, but if you work hard enough, you can get into the Buis Admin program!Honestly I would come in with an open mind, you may not want to transfer out after your first quarter or year! I wish I could give you more info, but I’m sure you’ll love UCI and figure out how to switch into you major if you need to!

@delete3x The humanities program is REALLY GOOD! I am personally not in it, but many of my friends are in it. It is a very hard program, like… you will be studying A LOT! But, its worth it. If you are good at writing, you will be fine though!

@collegeconfuse in all honesty, i would go to UCI! We are now the #3 hardest UC to get into, which looks SOOOO good on your diploma, your college worth in general will be great. The classes are not too difficult, they may be after your first or second quarter here, but after that you will get used to the class work and figure out how to manage your time and school work. There are alot of asians, but I don’t have a problem with them! I dont see why you should have a problem with them either, unless your for some reason scared of them?.. There are many other people with different backgrounds and heritages, so don’t based your school choice off of the people, because there are SO MANY students, you wont be forced to make friends with just asian people… i promise. Your sister goes to UCI. This could be good if you guys are close and then you would already have a friend or an in to parties and such, she could also teach you the fast track to studying and getting good grades, she could be your mentor. But if you guys aren’t close or fight, it could be detrimental in some way. But this is a family matter, so you should probably talk to your sister, family, or just rethink it yourself (maybe create a pros cons list?)

The campus is wonderful! Everyone loves it when they visit! So being 1.5 hours away is seriously a bonus, I am 2 hours away from home it is just enough to get away from my family, but at the same time if I randomly want to go home for a weekend or need to get back for a wedding or something, I can hop in my car and get there! I totally understand your worry about the classes, but honestly, YOU CAN DO IT! Just believe in yourself and work hard! You may slack off a bit your first year, everyone does, but you will get the hang of things and graduate within 4 years… you can do it! I know youre not racist, I understand how you feel about being around people similar to you, but remember that there is another 50% of people that you can probably relate to! KEEP AN OPEN MIND! <3 You will seriously love UCI… you have no idea until you get here! Best of luck with your decision… ps pick uci

hi, im a student who got rejected from uci. Im thinking about appealing… My reason as to why i want to appeal is because my parents were arguing at home and I also had some problems with one of my close friends… I have an average GPA of 3.5 to 3.6 for my sophomore and junior year. I have a friend who got accepted to UCI and she also had the same GPA as me for sophomore and junior year…Im just wondering how high the chance is that UCI will accept me via appeal… And also, I was required to write down my uci student id and application id…but I when I log in on the admissions website, I could only find my student id but i can’t find my appilication id…Do you by any chance know where I can find out my application id?

@Collegeconfuse If you can’t tell my by username, I’m asian. I got into UCI, UCSB, and SDSU, but I’ll submitted my SIR to UCSB. Why? Because it contrasts perfectly with my personality. I may not be adverse to asians or in my case whites like you, but I feel it’s important to step far outside of one’s comfort zone. I’m not exactly sure why you are so uncomfortable around asians but I can assure you we’re no different than you haha and if you take the leap you may end up liking UCI! I could easily have chosen UCI and gone with all of my asian friends and essentially extended my highschool social life at UCI, but that’s not what college is about! So do what you feel is right for you but don’t be afraid to take some risks.

@Mango101 your application ID is available on the admissions.universityofcalifornia.edu. Alternatively, I’m sure if you rummage around in your dedicated school email (if you don’t have one, you should make one) and there should be an email from UCI detailing your information. Good luck!

@nquyen thanks for your help! i really appreciate it!

thanks for replying moonstars!

Which meal plan and dorm is recommended? How do people usually get around? I don’t have a car, but I do have a bike.
Is there anything else I should know about UCI before I go?
