From Busch to Cook/Douglass

Does anyone know how long it takes on average to get from Busch to Cook/Douglass? I tried getting there on weekdays by bus, and I realized that I had to get off on College Ave to take another bus to Cook; I'm guessing it's the same when coming back to Busch from Cook which would be quite a hassel.

I'm concerned because I'm thinking of having half of my classes on Cook/Douglass, and I'm an engineer who's living on Busch. I would appreciate any suggestions on my idea of taking classes on Cook as an engineer.

I don’t think you have to change buses depending on which route you take.

My son currently has classes on Douglass/Livingston/College Ave. Personally, I would advise against Busch/Douglass classes unless you have to do it.

You can do it, but it will be frustrating at times, especially if you have classes at night or on rainy/snowy days. They changed the bus drivers this year and it has been a bit disorganized so far. If it is one class and you have lots of time before and after, that would be better than having an important class before or after your C/D class.

You can go directly from Busch to Douglass/Cook via the REXB bus. However, the REXB only stops at the Hill Center and ARC on Busch Campus.

And how long does it take for you to go there (at around 12pm) and get back at (10pm)? In one of the possibilities of my schedule, all my morning classes are on Busch while all my afternoon classes are on Cook/Douglass.

The only reason why I’m considering having classes on Cook is very silly, actually; the food at Neilson is much better than that at Busch (I like having nice dinner and dessert). Would it be too time consuming and not worth the energy to take classes on Cook/Douglass?

If I choose this schedule, I will have to commute to Cook 4 days/week.

I have Calculus on Busch 3x a week and I live on Cook/Douglass. The commute is really not that horrible once you get used to it. I usually leave myself about 20-30min to get to and from Busch, but I’ve been able to make the trip in a little under 20min. As long as you check Nextbus about an hour before you have to be at class you should be fine as the REXB only runs every 10-20min. Do not try and take the A/H to College Ave and then catch the EE/F to Cook, I’ve tried that and it’s much quicker to just catch the REXB. Be warned, however, that the REXB only stops at a few buildings on Cook. Make sure you look over and plan your bus routes before hopping on a bus blindly.

I asked my son and he said it takes “around 15 min”. Like the previous poster said, plan ahead and leave extra time in bad weather.

it takes about 15 minutes actual travelling time from busch to cook/douglass, but factoring in commuting time from your dorm to ARC or Hill Center and waiting for the REXB (which can reach the teens in minutes) it easily takes 30 minutes to get there. at around 12 you should probably leave at least 30 minutes early, at 10 pm it shouldnt be busy at all. i agree with knight2015, use nextbus to time everything correctly, otherwise you can find yourself for multiple buses for long periods of time. if you have all your classes on busch in the morning and all classes on douglass in the afternoon you should be fine. also if youre going to cook you want the ee or f, im pretty sure the REXB is just douglass stops, but like the lipman hall stop is really close to cook buildings.

Around noon you should be able to reach your class quickly, it’s going to cook/douglass during evening rush hour that can be dreadful. Taking the rexb will be a more straightforward route. However if you plan on going back around 10 pm, the rexb doesn’t run very frequently after 9, so you might have to look at nextbus and plan accordingly.

That’s true about the night buses. Even the Nextbus doesn’t work for that sometimes. For ex. Nextbus will say 20 min then it will go to 30 min then 45 min. Sometimes 2 buses in a row will go by full, and won’t let anyone else on. A lot of buses go out of service at night so that may also have something to do with it. If you don’t mind waiting, you’ll be fine.

Thank you, rualum, drexeler, flyingcrayons, knight2015, and cerps343. I’m still debating whether taking econ, calculus, and lab on C/D is a good choice; I chose it because all my other schedules made me switch campus multiple times each week (from Busch to College Ave to Livingston, and some of them had ridiculous/physically impossible combinations too), and I just can’t afford my energy to do that.

This particular schedule I’m talking about allows me to only swtich campus once, but 4 times a week. Assuming that a roundtrip to C/D takes approximately 30 minutes, the bus ride will consume about 2 hours a week! Yikes. So yes, I’m still thinking about it. I’d love to have all my classes on Busch, but lab and econ are just not offered on Busch for next semester. Any suggestions?

I’m a math major living in starky. It’s ****ing awful man… its 45 minutes to get to busch and 30-45 minutes to get back depending on luck. The rexb doesn’t even stop at my
“stop” (biel) so I need to take two buses to get to busch and usually I just hoof the second part of my trek on the way home. My suggestion would be get into the habit of reading/sleeping on the bus so its not dead time…theres not a really a way around it short of getting a car

How much time would there be between classes be if you went with the Busch-College Ave-Livi combination? If we had last year’s bus system, I would say to go with that combination. But this year, the buses have been unpredictable, and they’ll be even more behind schedule in wintry weather. Would you rather have several short bus trips throughout the week, or lesser and longer ones (which could also involve multiple buses)? Theoretically, you “longer” trip to cook/douglass would be on the way back.

How many times a day would you be traveling between Busch, College ave and livi?

It’s awful; on Monday, I have to go to Livingston from Busch, back to Busch (which isn’t so bad). On Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Busch to Livingston → Busch → College Ave → Livingston → Busch(to sleep). Wednesdays and Fridays are similar to Monday.
Also, some of these schedules they suggested had chem lab on Livingston, and then 20 minutes later, a class back on Busch. I deem it to be a very dangerous move especially for students who never want to be late for their classes.

See, I’m lazy as hell, so I don’t want to get on the bus several times a day (also, time is precious). Besides, the time waiting for each bus accumulates overtime and will well exceed the round trip time to Cook/Douglass. Don’t you agree?

Can you take another elective besides econ? (might fit better) Try to look at all possible schedule combinations.

Are you a freshman? You may not get your 1st class choices anyway.

As a previous poster said, the evening rush-hour is the worst. From 7am-4pm, it takes 15-20min, but from 4:30-6pm, it can take an hour or more. For example, last Friday, i waited 80 minutes for the bus to come, and then the bus ride itself took another 60 minutes.

Hi, I figured I would put my two cents in since I’m an engineering student who lived on Douglass and had to go back and forth five times a week last year. Factoring in wait times, the estimate of a half hour trip is pretty accurate except during rush hour. Since it is a decent commute, I usually just packed for the whole day and did he on Busch between classes to minimize the back and forth. Though, if you’re worried about spending two hours on buses per week it sounds like the CA/Live/Busch schedule would be about the same once you include wait times.

The trick is whether you would be willing/able to put some forethought into making sure you have everything every day ( there’s no room for forgetting hw in your dorm) and whether you are willing to sit on cook/Douglass between campus. Also, make sure you factor walking times into the comImute because it would take a lot longer to get to classrooms on the Cook side than on the Douglass side.

I realize there isn’t much time left in the semester, is there a day when you could test drive how the commute feels for you?

Crud. See, I realized that a few weeks ago AFTER my schedule for next semester has been set up. I blindly grabbed the schedule that had most of my afternoon classes on Cook/Douglass, and when I actually went there to follow the footsteps to my schedule, I realized that I made a mistake. Here’s why:

I have a class on Heldrich Science Building on two of the days, then I have to go all the way to Neilson (a 20-minute walk from HSB) to eat dinner after that. There’s no bus stop that’s near Neilson that goes back to Busch, so I have to then walk back. On the other two days, I have to get off in front of the Cav thetre, and walk to Hickman, then to Neilson…then back to the bus stop.

By the time I finished foot-tracking my schedule, I was already EXHAUSTED. And now, apparently, this schedule I chose is permanent, and very hard to change. I made the stupiddest mistake. Someone please kill me.

If you’re an engineer and reading this, please don’t make the same mistake I made. Be wise and stay on Busch as much as possible.

Sixflags it’s always good to view a map (easy to google) of the campus to see where the buildings are in relation to each other, before you choose your classes. Then look at NextBus to see where each bus stops. Anyway walking will make you healthier!

You say you are taking econ: why not take it at a cc during the summer? That might give you room to move your schedule around a bit.

I believe the RexB has a stop near Neilson.

The closest REXB stop to Neilson is Lipman Hall, which is only about a 5min walk.
Also, instead of eating dinner at Neilson you should consider just going to the DCC. The food there is much better and you can get up to $7.50 worth of food with a meal swipe. They have pizza, sandwiches, Mexican food, salads, and lots of ‘on-the-go’ sorts of things like fruit cups and yogurt. I have class in the Ruth Adams Building (right next to HSB) and it’s only about a 5min walk to the DCC, which is also conveniently located right next to the College Hall bus stop. A lot less walking for you and a lot better food.
