Hey everyone,

Yes, this is another inquiry about changing majors.

I was wavering between environmental science or environmental engineering and put down the latter as my intended major on the UC app and should be entering the College of Engineering in the fall as a freshman.

My reasons for choosing environmental engineering over environmental science were that it seems easier to transfer out than it is to transfer into the CoE and that I would be on a more direct track towards participating in alternative energy research.

But after laboring through Physics and Calculus (and still trudging through them), I've found that I'm not cut out for the engineer mold.

So my question is whether or not it's possible to switch out of the College of Engineering into the College of Natural Resources before CalSO so I could pick all the proper courses for ES and straighten everything out for this upcoming school year.

Searching through this forum, I read of someone who was able to do that so I'm hoping that you guys could kindly provide me with information on: who to contact, what to say/write, and when my request would be processed.

And also, if there's anything that distinguishes the ES major in L & S from the one in CNR besides the BA/BS designation.

I really appreciate any help and thanks a lot. :)

Hello,
I am currently trying to transfer from CNR to College of Chemistry. I talked to the freshman adviser from the college of chemistry and she told me that i should be able to transfer colleges before CalSO.

For L&S, i know that you have to wait at least one semester because the college is so impacted...

so, i would try to contact the freshman adviser in CNR... to see if that helps..

:)

PS. I think im in your fourth period class.. lol :P

And to think I could have had a comrade from school in CNR. ;_;

But thanks for the reply!
Is there quite a bit of paperwork you have to get done or could you simply call/email the adviser?

I just read from the ES handbook that the ES major was originally carried out solely by CNR and later on was offered jointly with L&S. So I'll go with CNR since it seems more established in that field, has a smaller student body, and isn't impacted.

Dude, this is like some Gov meeting grounds!

I'm bumping this for some second opinions...

I emailed CNR's Office of Instruction & Student Affairs and received a reply today:

Congratulations on your admission to Berkeley! It is possible to transfer
into another major but not until you have completed at least one semester
in the College of Engineering. This requirement is based on you
being evaluated in the admissions process to fit for that college.

So could anyone clarify that last bit?
Are they saying that they're determining my admission into CNR on how well I do in the College of Engineering?

I'm pleading to ascertain if there is absolutely no way that I could get out of the College of Engineering and into the College of Natural Resources before CalSO.
And if it's been done, could I get a few pointers on how to go about it...

My performance in physics has been just pitiable so I am really concerned that if I stayed in engineering, I wouldn't be in good academic standing by the time the first semester closed and consequently be unable to change colleges.

Thanks for any and all input.

Just take easy courses during your first semester and you'll be able to transfer out.

hello again!

haha i should just talk to you during government :P haha
but anyway..

when i was talking to the letters and science adviser before i went to go talk to the college of chem adviser, he told me that in order to get into L&S, he said that i had to complete one semester first. However, he also told me that some of the courses that i had to take in CNR overlap with those in L&S. So when choosing your classes, i guess you should see if any of the requirements in the engineering college overlap with CNR. The adviser said that most of the classes should since its freshman year, but i would double check with a CNR/Engineer adviser.

hope that helps.. :P

I thought that first semester you're not even taking any courses in your college except, maybe, a freshman seminar. So if you take a basic math class and a humanities class you should be okay, right? Maybe you can just tell your advisor what your plan is, and that person will tell you what to take your first semester.

Yes, just take Math 1A, an R&C class, and an AC class along with the engineering seminar. That's 13 units and you should do relatively well as to facilitate a transfer into CNR.

Everyone's posts have been of great help so thanks a lot!

I checked out samples of freshman schedules for both ES and CEE and most of the courses do coincide. In my blind fear of taking physics, I didn't realize that I'm not obligated to take it until spring, by which time I should be out and in the clear...

And yeah, my outline for a schedule is pretty much what Golden Bear recommends (Math 1A, an R&C class, the engineering seminar) with the difference of taking Chem 1A instead of an AC class. That would have been my plan as an ES major so I just need to get it approved by an adviser and I should be good to go. :)

And hi again, Jonathan!
Just out of curiosity, what are you majoring in and why are you trying to get out of CNR (when I'm desperate to get in :P)?

Oh, and which dorms did you put down as your first choice?
