From community college to Johns Hopkins?

Good evening everybody! I am a high school senior who is about to graduate and I am heading off to community college this summer. I will be taking one survey course as it will help me practice for the fall semester in terms of my studying skills. I will be a biology major as I am interested in studying neuroscience for my undergraduate degree. I want to either concentrate on premed or get into research eventually. So I am very interested in Johns Hopkins for obvious reasons. I mean there’s obviously more to my interest as I’m not necessarily only interested in the prestige of the school. I am aware that it’s a highly prestigious and rigorous school which I think would be a perfect environment since I’m trying to do research on a topic that could use more understanding. With that being said it is obviously difficult to gain admission to Johns Hopkins. For some background I did not really do too well in high school due to having to work full-time in order to financially support my family. I am not too interested in unleashing that entire can of worms but I guess it’s a compelling story and I guess it can account for my bad grades in high school. My GPA was a 3.2 and my SAT was a 1990. I just need a little bit of guidance as to what I should be doing now to prepare to get into Johns Hopkins (obviously other schools will be in the picture. And JHU is not the end all be all. It’s just a dream and it may not become my reality). I understand the importance of remaining levelheaded and deciding to transfer after seeing what my first semester grades are. However I believe that a bit of guidance is necessary so I can head in the right direction when the time is right. If you have any advice or any experience I would love to hear about it. Also how difficult is it to get into Johns Hopkins from community college? I will be taking biology with a lab, chemistry with a lab, English composition, and precalculus during the first semester and I will follow with calculus during the second semester. This is just the math sequence that my advisor recommended. I appreciate you all taking the time to read this and potentially answering some of my questions. I understand that with hard work, it can be possible. But I think I still need more advice and guidance on transferring. Thank you for your time.

Sorry I didn’t apply to Johns Hopkins but I know a friend who did so this isn’t from someone who applied there. i think it’s important to convey your passions for JHU as much as possible as if it is the only place you can be at. Try being as specific as possible from specific buildings for example and that’ll make you stand out. Do some ECS that are unique and are related to your major and incorporate that in your essay and how you can provide blah blah blah to JHU. I’m not sure how transfer friendly JHU is, I know Cornell is very transfer friendly so maybe you can consider that college too?

I know that transferring after freshman year however is more reliant on your HS transcript than transferring unior year

Wow I did not expect to get a response this quickly! Thank you so much. This is genuinely good advice and I appreciate you taking the time to provide it. I will try to convey as much as possible that I have a passion for the school.

If you are applying to transfer to other schools, I would recommend Cornell CALS, vanderbilt, and unotre dame. they accept mroe transfers than freshman applicants. Cornell CALS and CHE especially cares more about fit and I think they’re more leniant on HS and SAT scores. And they have majors that are really good for premed

No problem. Tbh Idk why I still stalk Collegeconf. I guess im just bored and hae nothing to do for this summer lol…

Hmm good idea. I have never really looked into ND or Vandy but I guess researching as many schools as I possibly can for my major is better than just setting my sights on one school. I’ll also look into Cornell more, as I only looked at SHA because at the moment, I thought I was qualified to do food service management and nothing more. Of course I have changed and am more interested in medicine. Btw I was reading that thread that you were in and the build up the suspense was just perfect. Congratulations on getting admitted to Cornell! That is absolutely amazing!

lmao thanks. that was an embarassing moment lol

That’s still so awesome though! I would take such a minor “embarrassing” moment for an awesome education. It was such an inspirational series of post to read about! Again, I extend my congratulations!
