For an applicant thinking of applying ED1 to Tisch Drama here's a question: is a possible outcome the waiting list (which would not be resolved until after May 1) or do they simply admit or reject? Further, if they only admit or reject for ED1, might it be smarter to do RD, since a place on the waiting list might marginally increase chances of ultimate acceptance?

Tisch does not offer deferral or waiting list to ED1 applicants (or at least did not when we visited in July).

BUT-- they do seem to admit ED1 applicants generously. We knew 5 who applied ED1 last year–all accepted. Of another 5 who applied RD, one (who was imho a great candidate) was denied. If you have an S or D who wants NYU above all (and who can be well-prepared to audition that soon), I’d suggest doing ED.

Thanks for the quick, clear responses!

Years ago, when my D was at Tisch, and also in the year she applied, they typically filled 1/3 of their class in the ED round. In a discussion with the Dean when my D had been at Tisch for a couple of years, I asked her about that in reference to a friend’s S who was applying. Her response was that the trend they had seen was a much stronger pool in the ED round than in the RD overall. Most applicants were stronger academically and also stronger artistically. Whether that has continued to be the case in the intervening years, I don’t know but I wouldn’t be surprised.

ED can be a good way to go if your student is sure that Tisch is the first choice and if you are willing to commit to attend without having the ability to compare financial aid packages. If you get an acceptance, it’s wonderful to know where your student will be attending before Christmas. Conversely, for the majority who do not receive an offer of admission, the timing couldn’t be worse and can make for a very unhappy holiday season. One thing I would insist on, and did!, is that the student have all applications complete and ready to go prior to that Dec. 15 decision date (I’m assuming that’s still the date). The last thing you want is a very disappointed student then having to work hard to get applications ready to go by Jan. 1.

northdad, the slim chance of being waitlisted and then admitted in the RD round should not be a determining factor in deciding between ED and RD, in my opinion. Very few kids get in off the waitlist at Tisch.
