From here to there...

I am going to be a college freshmen this fall and I am majoring in biology right now because....I would like to try my hand at the pre-med track :) (surprising, right?). I flipped through my coursebook and it looks as if I would have to major with a BS in biology in order to hit all the pre-med classes. A minor problem is that I have a lot of interests...I could major in something other than biology and just do the pre-med track but I wouldn't even know where to start in choosing another major. I would want to have a "safety net" career idea in case the pre-med plan flops on me. I want to do something health related right now; I can't see myself as a researcher in a lab though. Anyway....any general advice on what I should be doing right now to help prepare? I am currently taking an EMT class and I was considering getting a MCAT book to take a looksee at what I'm getting myself into.

Some questions...

-How many science with lab courses are considered a normal courseload for college? I might be taking two this first semester. How much extra time do labs usually take? I have heard rumors of biology being one of the more time consuming majors...

-What career opportunities are available for a biology major besides research and health care?

-Would it help me stand out to medical schools if I majored in something other than biology because that's such a common major?

Thank you :)

Just a second thought…

For those of you who are pre-med majors, I’m assuming you have time for other activities…

I was interested in doing marching band which will probably absorb 9-14 hours per week.

With classes and labs, etc. does that still leave enough time for studying and everything else a pre-med major is supposed to do? O_o If this is a dumb question you can laugh :p.

School will always come first but I’d like to be involved in something…especially an activity that I have spent the last four years doing.

I’m sure you can make time for marching band… as long as you skip breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Everybody has commitments to juggle. As long as you have good time management, you’ll be fine.

Also, I suggest you read some of the stickied threads in this forum.

if you feel like you want a “safety net” career don’t major in biology. Trust me I was in the position you are in 4 years ago only I decided to go on with biology and now I am unsure of whether I want to even go to medical school and I am stuck with a useless biology degree as a absolutely despise research. Major in something else that interests you, whether it be business administration, finance, accounting, engineering, physics, statistics, psychology, marketing, advertising, management, economics, political science, and do the pre-med track.
