Hi everyone,

Im currently enrolled in the business program with concentration in Management Inf. Systems (MIS).

Lately I've been thinking of changing my concentration to Accounting since I heard so many "horror" stories of MIS graduates having a hard time finding jobs, and the last thing i want is to stuck in a Help-Desk job until my "big break".

I know with accounting you have many open and secure doors for a career. You think it will be better to go to accounting?

Do you like MIS? Are you good at MIS? You should really do what you like. Accounting does open up more opportunities, but it’s meaningless if those opportunities are things that you don’t like doing.

Do you know what it is that you want to do after you graduate?

My primary goal was to get into software development or web development but from what I see in job postings, every company wants a CS degree. I also heard that the industry first hires CS major and the “leftover” goes to MIS graduates, so I guess that plan does not work out.

I am at MIS cause I enjoy technology and business but like I said if this is a dead end then maybe I need to reconsider cause I dont like to end up in Help-desk support.

If you’re good at what you do, your degree won’t really matter. But if you are really concerned, how far into your degree are you? Do you think you would be able to switch to CS? Do you not like Physics/Calculus?

Yeah I wont be able to switch to CS cause I am already on my 2nd year in MIS. However, since MIS and Accounting in in the Business program, I can do a double concentration.

I was on my 3rd year of Engineering when I switched to Accounting. Turned out the only thing I liked about Engineering was the Math. It’s never too late.

If you want to work around technology, then you shouldn’t let anything get in your way of that. Even if you do get a degree in MIS, you can still work with technology. If you’re good at something, it doesn’t matter if your degree is in CS or MIS.

How did you liked accounting? Did it worked out good for you?

I haven’t graduated yet, but it’s going great. I feel like a genius in all of my classes. Compared to Physics and even Calculus, all of the classes are really easy to me. I really enjoy the Math and working with Excel, even though it’s really basic things. The legal aspects are alright, and not too awful challenging to memorize.

That being said, most people in my Accounting classes struggle and find the classes very challenging for them.

I’d recommend doing some research before getting into Accounting though. It’s not all that similar to MIS. Have you taken Financial Accounting and/or Managerial Accounting yet?

Yes I finished them both with no problem at all. They were both part of the lower division courses. It was ok in terms of interest for me but I think the biggest plus with accounting is the job security and availability all over the US.
