From Northern Virginia TJ High school

My son is TJ high school senior. He has 4.34 GPA and 1530 SAT Score. Virginia Tech put him in waiting list. UVA deferred him from early action to regular decision. What is the possibility of getting into one these school? we are concerned.

My advice: Your son should have his guidance counselor contact the admissions rep of your son’s first choice and tell the rep that your son will definitely enroll if admitted (only if that’s true, of course). The GC should be willing to do that.

My son did contact his GC but GC advised my son to contact admissions rep directly and GC did not offer to do the same. If my son contact admissions rep directly, will that have enough significance?

It will. It’s been a brutal year in NoVA for these in-state selections. We’re still waiting on William & Mary.

If your son is unsure what to say when he contacts the admissions reps, he should ask his guidance counselor for help with that.

Has your son been admitted anywhere that he likes and your family can afford?

Wow- TJ 4.34 & deferred? it is a brutal NoVa year.

Surprised his GC wouldn’t plug for him, but he should definitely call. Remember the mantra: deferred is not denied. Just keep saying it.

We are waiting on other schools but it may become late to respond if we are waiting for them to declare their results by mid April. What if these two schools fill out all positions by then? That’s the dilemma we have now.

His current GPA is 4.4.

OP: There must be an undisclosed factor as it is a bit difficult to understand how a Virginia resident who has excelled at Virginia’s top high school has been deferred / waitlisted at both UVA & at Va Tech.

I suspect an undisclosed issue due to the reluctance or refusal of your son’s guidance counselor to advocate directly with the schools on behalf of your son.

But many of his classmates are in the same situation. Only top tier students with 4.5+ GPA and 1550+ SAT got accepted so far.

How many students are in your son’s senior class ?

Do you have a reasonable estimate of how many students in his class have earned a 1550 SAT plus a GPA of 4.5 or higher ?

Even if UVA or VT don’t work out favorably, your son will do great things elsewhere. No worries.

Most state schools have a charge to serve all residents, so the holistic review and diversity requirements can leave out some graduates of top high schools.

Around 450 to 500 students and 5% of them most likely to have 4.5+ and 1550+.

By God’s grace, UVA came back and made an offer. Thank you all for advising us to reach out to the admission reps… My son did reach out to the admission rep and conveyed his interest to join UVA. In the end, it all worked. He was born and raised in VA. I am glad my son goes to UVA.
