Hey, I live in NYC and I'm thining about going to University of Georgia but I'm not really sure yet...

Do you guys think it will be too much of a culture shock, and what's the school life like over there because only about 12% of students are from out of state so is everyone already friends?

I really like the south and I love the daawgs also but I'm not sure what its like in uga

Hey bud,I live about 20 minutes away from UGA...It will be a HUGE culture shock...But ya , pretty much all of the kids here know each other from high school, but it shouldnt be too hard to find friends. Its really really southern there...Its a very big party school also..

I personally dont want to go to UGA, trying to get out of the south, Not a big fan of it.

Layla, what's the appeal of UGa for you? What dod you hope it would provide that you don't think you'd find at a Northeastern or urban state university?

I am originally from NY and went to grad school at U of F. I now live in GA and have been to UGA. The "adjustment" to Fla didn't take long. At the time, the 2 things that struck me was that there was undergrad married housing (something that seemed foreign to me from the north) and the clothing styles at the time (many yrs ago) were a bit different. If you happen to be applying ot the UGA honors program, you'll probably be in the dorm with the other honors students and will have a built in social group. BTW not everyone had buddies from HS. It is a state school, so obviously that will happen some, but its not like you'll be left out. You'll fit in fine with all the sstudents fromthe metro Atlanta area.

I just visited UGA on Friday and Saturday for the first time, so I can tell you a few things about it from a newcomer's point of view.

There are bulldogs EVERYWHERE. I had heard about them before, but I didn't really expect to see them on my pizza box.

The campus is really nice. The trees are really pretty fall shades right now, and the older parts of the campus look quite peaceful and relaxing.

There is a pretty good nightlife. We ended up having dinner at a wing place, and everyone we saw there looked pretty approachable. The students are very kind to strangers.

Athens is almost completely about UGA. It is truly a college town. It's about two hours away from Atlanta, but it looks interesting.

I didn't get to see a lot about the university, but those are some general things I noticed. I have no idea how much of a culture shock it would be from NYC to Athens, since I've lived in Georgia almost my entire life.

Funny... I'm doing the complete opposite you are. I'm leaving Georgia to go to school in New York.

I'm not a fan of UGA at all. I've visited many times, and most of the students I talked to were closed-minded individuals and the school wasn't that pretty. Academics are decent, but not amazing. I don't consider it that chill of a place, though I will admit that Athens itself if a pretty cool town.
