From NYU to UCSB

hi! i need some help. I will be starting at NYU in the spring time but i do want to go to UCSB really bad. I cant leave nyc just yet and i do not want to wait any longer to start school. I would like to transfer maybe next spring so that will be one school year at NYU including summer classes. Can anyone give me any info about transferring to UCSB? what do i have to do so they can take me? anything will be appreciated thanks

If you're totally sure that you want to transfer out of NYU and you haven't even started school, you really should save your money, go back/move to CA and enroll in a community college. I'm completely serious- NYU is unbelievably expensive and it's a total waste of money to be there if you don't want to. Withdraw from NYU, start at a ccc in January. Save yourself so, so, so much money and increase your chances of getting into UCSB.

thanks for the reply Connels. I understand where you are coming from but I hardly will be paying anything at NYU my job at the hospital will pay abig portion and so will financial aid. I love the idea of going to a ccc but i cant afford that move at the moment. I really cant see my self paying for an apartment over there just yet.

Damn dude, I'd stay at NYU.

I've only heard of bad things about NYU from people I know of who go there. The main complaints were that there's no centralized campus, so it doesn't really "feel" like college. Not to forget it's ridiculously expensive to go to school at NYU and to live there.

You will pay an arm and a leg for UCSB as a non-resident. From what you are saying (job + finaid at NYU), it sounds to me that staying at NYU is a no-brainer.

I'd agree with the post above, however we should consider the fact that the OP has his/her reasons for looking into transferring to the West Coast.

Personally, I'd love to go to Stern @ NYU. I love the urban/city life, which NYU is surrounded by. However, realistically speaking, the transition from NYU to UCSB would be a difficult and tedious one, are you ready to make that commitment?

Yeah UCSB and NYU are polar opposites in a sense.

What is it about UCSB that you really like? (I'm not being a jerk, just trying to get an idea of why you are transferring.) If NYU is going to be cheaper than a ccc, I'd definitely stay at NYU. Keep in mind that UCSB only accepts junior level transfers so you will need at least 60 semester credits before you transfer and you will need to complete your general education requirements. With AP credits this is possibly doable in a year, but it might take two. Just make sure you plan accordingly. UCSB Admissions

UCSB doesn't generally require you to have your major prerequisites done, although it is a good idea to start working towards them. There are some exceptions though- biological sciences, econ, computer science, business and some others have specific requirements- so if you know you want to major in one of those, make sure you've met all the requirements. Keep you GPA up, obviously. Being out of state is an issue but UCSB's admission rate for fall 2008 was 68%, so you've still got a good shot, although only 2% of the class is from out of state. The average GPA of transfer students was 3.17. Admission Profile

More than anything, do everything you can to have a stellar GPA. Admissions at SB isn't too stringent, but the out of state thing is a issue. And, though you've probably heard this a million times, tuition for an out of stater is really high. Being from out of state may also affect what you get for financial aid, but I'm not sure. Good luck.

i have been over to UCSB to surf at Rincon and other popular spots. I think im going to have to go with NYU i saw the budget for non-Ca residents and its well over $40 grand. They make it very difficult for anyone not in the state to transfer. I figured if i got in to NYU, Colombia and Penn state that i will be able to transfer to UCSB with no problem, what the hell was i thinking? haha I also took a look at CSU Long beach i probably do not have a shot at that one either. anyone have any idea about that one? if not ill stay at NYU wich will make me pretty unhappy lol but it is a great school.

You want to transfer out of NYU so that you can surf. Wow.

You should at least visit UC Santa Barbara as it is one of the most beautiful places in the country. The campus actually protrudes out into the ocean & is surrounded by water on three sides. I agree that the two schools are almost polar opposites both in terms of campus locales & types of students attending each school.

Surfing is a reason but it is a minor reason although taking the packed city trains to a beach for over 9 years is getting pretty old. I love nyc but in the spring and summer time only. I actually took classes at nyu in the summer time and I loved it.I Absolutely love Washington square park I hang out there all the time. It also sounds cool to say "I go to NYU" lol but I'm tired of waking up sick every day of the winter. I have UCSB a few times and other parts of Cali and it just feels right. I will get home sick I'm sure if my stay was to become permanent.

Wait, wait, wait...you got into Columbia University and didn't attend? Oh, my...

Sorry but location means a lot to me and Columbia is only 2 blocks away from me. I applied to Columbia because my sister goes there and she wanted me to do it. I do not like the area i live in. I did land a great job at Columbia Presbyterian and Cornell tho. The students at NYU are more i dont know down to earth?
