from UNC wilmington to IVY

I am currently attending UNC wilmington and...

I was not happy with this college from Day 1. I did not like it here during my orientation session and opening days, and I straight out hate this place now. I hate the weather, I don't like the beach, and I don't like the atmosphere. I am thirsty for culture, and it's very hard to find one that I crave. OR, culture here is that you surf and party. I am not into culture here at all.
Every night as I fall asleep I wish I was somewhere else.
Every morning when I open my eyes, I despise my existence here and only wish to be anywhere else.
I feel like I really don't fit in here.
To be completely honest, the only reason I came to UNCW is because I was not as successful as I wished to be during my high school career.
(but I can def. explain it in my essays - that's how I got into colleges in first place with detrimental GPA)

I am not satisfied with the quality of education I am getting at UNCW.
Apparently, UNCW is second best public university in North Carolina, right behind UNC Chapel Hill. However, I feel like I am not being challenged enough.
Assignments that I do for my classes are more or less of a busy work than mind/brain challenging assignments.

So... I am determined to apply as sophomore transfer student for fall 2010, and I am ready to do whatever it takes to get me there.

I am expecting to get GPA of 3.7 to 4.0 for this semester for the following courses:
Advanced Freshman English
Single Variable Calculus 2
Intermediate Spanish
General Chemistry1
Music History

For next semester, I am planning to take:
Intro. Eng Lit
Multivariable Calculus or Linear Algebra or Differential Equations
Micro Econ
Music Lesson for major
(but I am not a music major - I just happen to have a good musical background)
General Chemistry2
Sociology of birth and death or Criminology or Communications Theory
(whichever one fits my schedule the best)

I also have SAT reasoning: 2070
SAT II math iic: 800
Chemistry: 760
TOEFL: 117 (out of 120)
I am planning to take the reasoning test again in January or February to get my score up to 2200 range.

Additional info: I have excellent extracurricular activities from high school, but not so much in college. Should I try to be more involved?

I frankly have no idea where UNCW stands in terms of national college rankings, besides the fact that it is second best public university in North Carolina, and that UNCW is known more as a party school than its academic programs.

I am planning to apply to all IVY league schools except for Harvard and Princeton (Yale, Brown, UPenn, Dartmouth, Cornell and Columbia.), b/c those two schools don't accept transfer students. And Duke and UNC Chapel Hill, possibly Stanford and NYU as well.

How much of a chance do you think I have, to get into any of the IVY league schools?
(if I had choice, I would love to attend either Yale or Columbia)
I have not decided on my safety schools, and I would greatly appreciate it if anyone here can suggest some for me.

p.s.1 Please feel free to ask any questions about this thread:)
p.s.2 to those of whom are considering of UNCW, please do not get offended by my comments. Most people here absolutely love the school.

I can’t chance you on all of these, but I can tell you that Yale is extremely tough for transfer to get into and, statistically speaking, students have a much better chance of getting in as a freshman. You can check the exact percentage in the 2009 transfer rates thread.

You also may want to narrow your list down a bit. No offense, but it seems like you just want the ivy league name without knowing which one appeals to you the most. They’re all great schools, but some of them vary greatly in terms of student body demographics, general ideology, location, etc.

And of course, you should get more involved at your campus since it can only help your chances. I’d also recommend waiting a year so your good college gpa can mitigate the effects of your sub-par high school record.

I do have to agree that I want the ivy league name, and that that is why I have such large list of colleges.
However, there is a serious personal reason behind it - I am not just a mindless admirer of brand name college.
These schools do vary greatly, and they each have different appeals to me.
Some schools are more appealing to me than some others, but I didn’t specify which one because if I happen to get into any of the schools above, I would be more than happy to attend one even if it is not my preferred college. I am just too desperate to get out of here.

if you can’t chance all of the schools since there are MANY schools listed…
Would you please list a couple of colleges which I have some chance of getting into?
My preferences are:

 1. Columbia
 2. Yale
 3. UPenn
 4. Cornell, NYU

thx

You’ll want to wait a year most likely to try to overshadow your HS record. I know from emailing Columbia that they look for transfer applicants to have similar SAT/ACT scores and HS GPA as first year students, I would assume its the same at PENN and only more competitive at Yale.

Would it hurt my chances of the successive year if I try to transfer this year, don’t make it, and then try again next year?
As far as I am concerned, most schools do not accept spring transfer students, and I am afraid that there might be a gap in terms of level of education I got during the first 2 years of college and the expected level at the college which I am transferring to.

No, it wouldn’t hurt your chances to reapply. Cornell and NYU actually do Spring transfer admissions, with the exception of engineering majors at Cornell I believe (I’d have to check that again to make sure.)

I’d like to chance you, but I don’t really have much to go off of besides your SAT scores and a prospective first semester GPA. I can tell you that you should have a good shot at NYU if you keep up your grades up and get some more ECs. Your chances at Cornell would vary greatly depending upon your prospective college/major at Cornell. Again, you should wait a while before applying to place more emphasis on your college work.

If you have more specific questions about Cornell, feel free to join us in the Spring 2010 Cornell thread.

BTW, have you ever considered just transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill?

i’m reviving this to see if you were ever able to transfer? i want to get an idea of how hard it is to transfer from UNCW
