Hey everyone,
I recently got admitted as a transfer into UCSD for Undeclared major instead of the Mechanical Engineering major or Aerospace Engineering alt that I applied for. I am still waitlisted at a few more schools and should be notified soon about that, but for now I am scheduled to go to SD.
My questions are, how difficult is it to get into either program after my first year? and should I try to declare another major like Math or Physics in the meantime?
Also, if I am accepted into an engineering program at another school, would it be better to go for the sure spot?
I have heard great things about UCSD and that I can really succeed there.
I can provide more info if needed.
Thank you.
I have a friend that was put in the same situation. She applied for Comp Sci, but UCSD placed her in Undeclared Engineering. She really loved the school, so she decided to take her chances there. From what I’ve heard, the atmosphere of UCSD was perfect for her, but the academics were too rigorous. It’s been very hard for her to get into the major since it’s highly impacted. I wouldn’t major in Math or Physics to just place yourself in UCSD unless you had a real interest in majoring in either subjects. What is the other school you’re waiting on? It may be a better choice if you’re accepted directly into the engineering department.
I am still waiting on Cal Poly Pomona and UCI
My brother is just finishing up his degree in ME at UCI and it seems alright there, plus it’s local.
Unfortunately, math has become a capped major as of fall 2016. I think it may have been filled up by students who couldn’t get computer science and chose it as an alternative.
A year ago, someone on UCSD - Reddit said that to transfer into Mechanical Engineering you needed a 3.7 or 3.8 in the criterion courses, and for Aerospace Engineering a 3.4. I believe that you have the opportunity (once you have completed the criterion courses) to apply at the end of each quarter, and the GPA of people who get in varies from one quarter to the next, depending on how quickly the spaces fill up.
