From US High School to Canadian University

Hi All,

My Daughter (D) is in 10th grade in a US public high school. She just scored 2320 (800M, 800CR, 720 W) in her first SAT attempt. Is straight A and is taking AP courses.

We are Canadians working in the US on a NAFTA visa. We are Non Resident Canadian.

My D wants to become a Medical Doctor. She wants to live and practice in Canada.

She and I have been looking at the McGill and UoT web sites.

I noticed that the tuition for:

McGill:
Residents of provinces other than Quebec pay double tuition than Residents of Quebec.

Undergraduate fees (2011) | Student Accounts - McGill University

UoT:
Thay have a concept of "Domestic Student". But they don't define what exactly a Domestic Student is.

Tuition Fee Schedule 2011-12

Since we are living in NC, USA we are currently not residents of either of these Provinces. My questions are:

1) For UoT: are we considered domestic?
2) For MCGill, Tuition per 6-credit course is around $1171. How can I determine the annual tuition?

3) Is being resident of a province impact the tuition fees?

4) Is there any possibility of getting Merit based scholarship for her? DO high SAT scores and school scores help?

5) The reason we are considering only Canadian schools is that after her Undergraduate, she will want to give MCAT and try for admission to a medical school. We are told that it is very hard to get any kind of financial aid in Med. Schools in the US for non-US students. If this is the case, then if she goes for an American University (for undergraduate), how hard is it to find a Medical School in Canada for her medical studies? Would it be easy to get admission into a Canadian Medical school after doing undergraduate from US University?

6) On UoT site:

Medicine (Domestic Fees)

Doctor of Medicine is listed under undergraduate. Is this accurate?

7) Is there a school in Canada where Medicine can be pursued after completion of US High School ?

Thanks.

Tuition at McGill is complex and varies widely based on program and student origin. The following may make it easier to figure out:

[Student Accounts - McGill University](| Student Accounts - McGill University)

For a non-Quebec Canadian, tuition and fees are about $16,500 for the first year. First year MD students take 70 credits (Yikes!)

Yes, in Canada MD, DMD and law students are considered undergraduates although direct entry from high school is not available and a bachelior’s degree is usually required.

Quebec is the only province to charge out of province tuition to Canadians I believe.

Most Canadian medical schools admit very few out of province students. I’m not sure how your status as a non-resident Canadian would affect admission eligibility.

Competition for medical school admission in Canada is no less intense than in the US.
