Frosh

So, assuming I get in (fingers crossed/knock on wood), is frosh a good way to meet people, or should I wait until everyone isn't in a drunken stupor? If it matters, I'm applying to the faculty of science.

good luck!

yea i was admitted and im wondering this too

Haha, I can’t wait until Frosh week. It’s going to be awesome

Frosh is awesome in some respects, and ****ty in others. It depends what faculty you guys are in, because they all do different things. And yes, frosh is a good way to make friends, but I wouldn’t worry about that, your residence is also a great way to make friends.

As for the fun level, Science is hands down the craziest and most fun, if I were you guys I would try and snag a bracelet from someone in the science frosh that doesn’t go. Frosh is one of those things were alumni come back and lead frosh groups because they had that much fun. There’s dumb activities and drinking during the day, and clubs and parties during the night. Its great way to experience the city with your peers.

Also, in case you guys didn’t know, there is a similar thing at the beginning of each winter term called carnival. This is not limited to freshman, however, but consists of about a dozen teams that participate in week-long drinking contests, followed by sponsored parties. Of these, management carnival is arguable the craziest, but science carnival is also a good time. And similar to frosh, you don’t have to be in a management to do management carnival.

How about engineering frosh?

ooo yeah, i applied to faulcuty of science, hehe. Hopefully i won’t be all partied out from the summer!

don’t know much about eingineering frosh, its a small incoming class, i know that, and itll be like 80-90% males. but everybody likes to have a good time. the difference between the froshes is 1) the amoutn of kids in it and thus the amoutn of available alcohol, 2) the amount and frequency of organized activities, 3) the quality of activities, ie. how fun they are and if the parties are at cool places.

the main drawback with sci frosh is you end up sitting around doing nothing for some time, but that depends on how organized it is and how drunk the organizers are

Ah frosh. I didn’t go myself (saved the money), but anyone that I know who did never saw or talked to the people they met there ever again. So it’s not the best way to make friends (though it’s a half decent way to get drunk, I guess).

Frosh is, honestly, whatever you want it to be. Some people— I like to call them the "frosh leaders of tomorrow’— go to every single event, get absolutely trashed, and have a ridiculous time. I myself went to most things, drank, and hung out but was a bit more low-key about it, but had fun.
As far as making friends, a lot of people worry that if they don’t come out of frosh with a new set of ‘besties’ then they’ll never make friends at mcgill. They are flat-out wrong. I met some people during frosh that i still see around and will say hi to, and a few that I still hang out with from time to time [mind you, i’m still in first year], but the best friends I’ve made here so far have been in rez and in my classes. So, don’t rest too much on frosh, and don’t worry about it even if you don’t enjoy yourself that much. It’s really not that big a deal.
