Frustrated about being Waitlisted?

I feel so ****ed off and angry that I got waitlisted.

I’m definitely not saying that BU made a bad decision to Waitlist me, but compared to the people that got into BU from my school, I definitely feel like I should’ve got in.

Does anyone else feel that way? And if so, post your stats.

I rejected the waitlist thing in a second though, because I know that I will choose UCSD in a second over BU.

Stats:
SATs: 750 (Verbal) 710 (Math) 600 (Writing)
SATIIs: 700 (Math 2) 740 (Math 1) 800 (Korean)
ECs: Varsity Swim Team Captain, Performed at Carnegie Hall and other NYC halls for a violin competition that was nationwide, Volunteer Music Group Founder, Library Volunteer, Model UN Award Recipient
GPA: B+
Location: CA
Essays: I believe they are stellar.
Ethnicity: Asian

It's not that you're "not good enough," or anything, it just might be that they dind't think you were a good match for the school. HS Seniors get so wrapped up into getting into places and having high scores, but it's so much more important to think of the places that have what you want and need to get the best education for you.

A girl at my school got waitlisted at BU which was a big shock and two kids who no one thought had a shot at BU got in. Weird...

BU, GW, NYU, and universities like them that are in the position to mold their classes to create a certain type of student body. GW goes for the more proactive, political, fiesty students (I am one of them) while NYU is a bit more cosmopolitian and artsty and BU is a much more laid back, big city school. If they feel you won't fit they will not take you over someone else, also if they feel you would not go to their school over another they will turn you down.

what you mean by laid back? like easy?

hardly, but the students are more so there to study, work, and play -- meaning they don't have any alterior motive like at NYU, where arts are largh (Tisch) or GW, where politics controls the university (DC in general).

CA_girl: I, for one, am surprised at BU's decision. They may have thought u were overqualified and would not attend if admitted. Which school did u apply to?

However, colleges seem to be getting more competitive by the minute and it's impossible to pinpoint exactly what adcoms are looking for in an applicant. Are u going to stay on the waitlist? ---Whoops, nevermind...saw what u said about UCSD. Great school!

yeah i know how you feel with this. it happened tome too with some other school but like i heard from a college counselor that colleges waitlist a lot of people these days that seem overqualified because if a large amount reject the school then they're ratings go down. so don't worry. plus, you don't even really want to go there anyways. so at least people who really want to go there have gotten in.

i'm from san diego and ucsd is a really pretty campus. i love lajolla and i think you'll have a great time there.

Wow... that is strange.
I was a fraction away from applying to UCSD but decided against it because its so far and rather expensive for me (being from Ohio and all).
You should be happy there.

You're asian and don't have an A average, two strikes against you in the admission process. I was waitlisted and way less qualified than you, so good luck.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

I think I feel a lot better now. It just doesn't make sense though... some other people who I believe were much less qualified than me got in... it's just so oaefgiasduinsodo9sifnosopg. aaaah.

want to define "much less qualified"??

i dont really understand you. you said yourself you didn't even want to go here and would take ucsd immediately over bu. so why are you still upset?
and you make it sound as if the people who got in don't deserve to get in.

yeah CA_girl...you are kinda being an elitist...and offending some ppl on this site..if BU doesnt mean anything to you ..then dont post on the forum...some ppl dont want to hear their school be continuously looked down upon by someone whos "too good" for it....i mean this is just an opinion..so take it for what its worth

You think maybe her attitude came through in her app or in her recs??? Hmmm...

fingerscrossed that was mean

I'm also frustrated by being waitlisted. I had a 2030 SATI and SATII's all 650+. Ranked 35/304. I find it odd that people with lower stats than me were accepted while I was waitlisted. I'm not being elitist or anything, that's just silly.

I can understand why I may have gotten waitlisted though, I mentioned I was applying to some "better" schools on my BU app, and even though it says it doesn't influence your admission decision, I am somewhat skeptical of that. I admit it's my fault for writing a pretty crappy "why BU?" essay and never visiting, but I was seriously considering attending Boston University. I think it's pretty amazing for a typical "safety" school from what I've heard.

Oh well, I hear applicants generally do well off the waitlist, and BU admissions called me today, so I guess I'll call back tomorrow and see what my options are.

BU must be catching Tufts syndrome. This phenomenon was named after Tufts University, which routinely rejects applicants if it believes they're using Tufts as a safety. This accomplishes two things: the college becomes more selective in its acceptance rate and its yield increases. US News & World Report looks favorably on those trends, and the college could jump in the rankings.

But it also reduces the "middle 50%" SAT and ACT scores if they don't accept the kids with the higher stats. That is a lot more visible piece of data than % accepted. Is it possible they just thought the kids weren't a fit for some other reason?

My D will test the Tufts Syndrome at Tufts. She applied there at the last minute, never visited, never contacted them. Her app came out of the blue to them. So we will see.

I'm sorry if I insulted some people, but some people in my school to be blantantly honest, didn't quite have the stats that I did but got accepted.

And it upset me.

Sorry if I sounded elitist, but it's just the way I felt. Huge apologies to anyone who felt angry.
