Frustrated about summer

So it's basically been a month since summer's out and that futility of this summer is killing me. (I'm a rising junior) Initially I planned to do camp counseling, but that didn't work out, so then I tried to find a job but that's impossible because nobody's hiring in my town. Then I tried doing something productive like getting an internship but now all the internships are filled, so basically, I am left with the rest of the summer... doing nothing. I'm extremely depressed now because I have days on end doing NOTHING... and pondering the uselessness of this summer and me. Not only because this will not really help my college apps, which are coming soon, but also because I am an active person and I hate just sitting around!!!

So anyway, there goes my tirade.... what do you guys do when no opportunities come in the summer??

Take classes at a local college. Sign up for online classes. Take them in areas not offered by high school like intro sociology, intro anthropology, or something else like that.

Yep. I’m in the exact same situaiton. Go on craigslist or some other job listing site. I’ve been sitting around since my job fell through and… that’s the reason why I’m going for an interview in a few. :)

Volunteer - there’s a national election coming up, you could work on a campaign. There maybe local campaigns. Volunteer at a local hospital, elder center.

Start a lawn mowing service or babysitting. Learn how to create a web page.

Set yourself some physical goals - walk every day, or work out, or bike.

Ask your parents if they need any projects done around the house - maybe you can help paint, or do yard work

Plan an activity with friends

Read

You should volunteer somewhere…there’s always a spot for volunteers.

Yea go hit the weights it’ll make you feel good :). You could also go on volunteer match and look up some stuff you can do.

Thanks for the suggestions!

the problem is that i do work out for about 2 hrs in the morning, and since I live in a pretty rural place, my mom refuses to drive me anywhere that’s 30 mins away, so that greatly limits my volunteer opps!

But i’ll try to lawn-mowing thing :)

Try online classes, then?

How about start prepping for SAT/ACT? Junior year is a big year. You will have PSATs and the SAT/ACT to take and maybe some subject tests. In short: Junior year is the standardized testing year! Get ready. Anyway, that’s my advice!

(I got 185 on my PSAT. Not horrible, but nowhere close to what I could have done. If I had prepared more I could have been chosen for NMS awards. The point is, the PSAT not only could get you a full ride it could give you a really good honor/award to put on applications. Don’t waste the opportunity! The PSAT has a greater purpose than just a cheap pre-SAT!)

Go to Czechoslovakia or China and take a thermodynamics course.

or be a hardcore gamer, read at the rate of jackrabbit reproduction, you know. you can always improve your reading skills and stuff.

actually I take all of that back: go travel. It’s worth it.

Yeah, read, study for SATs. Work would be nice. Volunteer. You could also look for scholarships…

Go to the beach. There’s always stuff to do at the beach.

I’m trying to teach myself Java, study for the SATs, volunteer like crazy, and help my dad redo the house.

I’m in the same situation. What I’m doing is:

-catching up on some really great books
-taking SAT classes
-going to the movies/six flags/out to eat at a fancy restaurant/ the city every week
-volunteering in jesus camp, a hospital, ambulance corps, community forum
-i want to work in an art museum, but i guess spots are filled ;_;
-painting murals
-designing/creating clothes
-self studying the courses I’m taking during junior year so I don’t do as miserably as I did this year
-drawing, painting, piano
-oh, and i’m looking for a mentor for my intel project. maybe I could start research on that, too.

do any of you really productive people watch TV??? cos i do that…a lot…

I’m in the exact same situation.
Some things I’m doing are:

attending language immersion programs (one of the community colleges here has classes for dirt cheap and I’m addicted to learning new languages)

Write a book (not to get published, I just think it’s fun.)

Paint, draw

Work on my online portfolio

Work on some of my websites

I might try and get a job in D.C. as a tour guide or in a museum.

T.V. disgusts me.

You need to find something or you are in deep trouble college-wise…

…=/

Why? What don’t you exactly like? There are some great shows and programs on there; not to mention the hordes of movies and commercials. Lol. Not that I’m an avid TV fan (save that for computers/games), but still..

Chill, junior year is going to kill you so you might as well enjoy having free time while you can. Read, run, hike, tan, w/e.
