Frustrated (almost) Senior

I am at a certain issue and I will like to hear people with similiar experiences or advice.

I live in Jersey and ever since I always wanted to go to school in NY. My first year I went to a private school, took out a big loan and could not afford to go back the second year. Rather than opt to go to a CC in NJ, I went to one in Ny thinking at the time I could get good grades and articulation agreements with a AS degree to a college in NY.

Now I am at a senior college (CUNY school) and I had a bad experience. CUNy is trying to expand to out of state students and the dorm life was horrend. They wanted full semesters up front after two weeks of moving in. And sadly, I barely got FA to pay for my classes. At the school I am curently enroll, I can graduate in Spring 2012. But I can not afford it, not even barely a semester.

So I apply to state schools, Rutgers and Montclair to see what FA I would get.( Everyone has to wait til next week to figure out the costs and end of July or early Agust to see what FA they would get)

Now no matter what school I go to, I am planning to get a BA in Theater in either schools. Besides the costs, the reason why I dont want to go back for the Fall because I will barely do anything. There are not mluch performance or behind scenes class like the schools in NJ not even a chance to do an intership.

So right now I am looking into colleges that will help me in my field, nor less just to get a degree and not find work in my field and then get a Masters. I dont want to teach.

So choices are:
1) go to a school simply cause I can finish off cousres, get a degree (brooklyn)
2) go to school simply because it has well known name and connectiions (rutgers)
3) go to a school that not known in NY but has opportunities to perform and internships (Montclair)

I’d go with Montclair. If you have those opportunities for internships, they themselves will get you connections. If you still want to go to school in NY, you could use those connections to get jobs and potentially have enough to pay for grad school at Columbia School of the Arts or Tisch or something.

I wouldn’t say Montclair is “not known” in NY. Don’t sell yourself or the school short. It has a good reputation as a theatre program, it’s just growing! If you’re from NJ originally it’s probably cheaper for you as well which might be nice. If you have a lot of credits as a transfer you’d probably be able to graduate in less than 4 years in a B.A. program and then could move to NY. NJ is not that far off, as I’m sure you know- just a train away!

Another thing to clear up is Rutgers also has opportunoties for internships.

@kylebelieves I am actually planning to go to a conservatory since it is cost affected in nyc.

@AlexaMT i am from jersey. I realize that i should not make Montclair seems like a low rate CC. It just tht where the area i am from its either Rutgers or CC then Rutgers or bust. I realize it has too much hype. What made me not look up or any interest in Montclair because they are known for Musicial Theater than stage or film and tv. Also i will probably graduate in two years. Hopefully.

I am now gears toward Montclair. I know they have a film and broadcasting program but does anyone know if there are student film opportunities. Also I was wondering if BAs are allow to do senior showcase. In the course description it says senior only theater majors.
