Why don't American universities do that?

Is the bar higher for American applicants? How much higher? Based on what you say, it doesn't appear that they are treated equally.

Not it's not higher. As you surely know, German students do have to pass the Abitur as leaving examination. This requirement ensures that foreign students fulfill the same prequisites.

wow - this thread has me all wound up! Sulipro - the bottom line is why should you get FA when our own US Citizens of the same caliber as you frequently don't? Cornel made it as clear as possible - they don't give $$ to international students except in the most outstanding of circumstances. Clearly you do not qualify as that since you didn't get $$$, nor were you even accepted to the other US schools you applied to. Take your $1000 opportunity in Germany. It is clearly a much better deal and will give you a good education and stop complaining about not getting free money in the US. You are not entitled to US Financial Aid. Surely you recognize that gaining a university education in Germany for only $1000 is clealry a good deal. Obviously the education value is significantly more than that and the university must be getting the balance of the money from someplace, perhaps taxes? If you are entitled to anything, it is in Germany where your family has supported/paid taxes.

now, tell me how do you expect to receive financial aid from Cornell if you can't make the cut at Trinity?
