I received a letter from the mail encouraging me to apply for the Freshman Science Honors Program a couple of days ago. I assume USC sent me the letter because I intended to major in biochemistry, but I'm not sure if I really want to. I have always thought about majoring in biology/chemistry, but I was never completely sure because I also really like physics and math. I was told I could change my major so while at USC I can find what best suites me, but if I do end up choosing biochemistry, the FSH program seems entriguing. Could I apply now, and then decide if biochemistry is right for me? Or would I be "locked in" to a biochem major? I ask because I think I would actually enjoy the more in depth courses for bio and chem (since I will take these classes to determine my interest and earn credits possibly), but like I said, I also like other subjects.

No- you would not be locked into anything. It is rather simple to change majors within Dornsife. Being in FSH doesn’t change this at all- it is just a few different classes that you take instead of the regular series. If you are interested at all now, you should apply. You can always change your mind later, at orientation, or after the first semester.

Thank you! While filling out the application I cam accross a problem. I took AP Biology as a freshman. I got an A+ in the class and a 5 on the AP test, but the app only lets me place classes from sophomore year. Is there some way I can show this? I only ask because I read the decisions were based heavily on AP classes and test scores.

Instead of taking BISC 120/220 and CHEM 105A/B (the general chem and bio classes), in FSH you would simply take BISC 121/221 and CHEM 115A/B which are the exact same classes material wise, just separate sections for the FSH students. You would be taking those classes anyway for the Biochem major and if you wanted to change majors you would just take the respective courses for that major you changed to after the first semester, you aren’t locked to anything.

The application asks me for my biolgy class in high school. I took AP Bio freshman year, got an A, and got a 5 on the AP test, but the application does not allow freshman clasees. I heard APs really come into consideration for the application, so is there some way I can put this on my app?

Indicate that you took AP Bio your freshman year (with grade and AP score) under the question “Anything else important?”.
