Thanks Parent2Noles for posting this very sobering information.

I was very happy to see FSU at #36 in this listing. However, I was shocked at the fact that most of the colleges/universities my daughter visited and considered, in and out of FL, were not listed at all.

My dh and I have been very happy with our dd's decision to enroll at FSU and now feel even more reassured concerning her personal safety.

I think on campus fsu is great at protecting students and campus police definitely deserves an award for its hardwork, just last week they setup 3 DUI checkpoints to make sure people weren't driving under the influence on campus something which i think is a good thing since we're such a heavily pedestrian campus, now off campus is a different story, frenchtown is kinda scary at night.

Just looking at the campus will show that is is safe. You are usually always within 50-60 feet of one of those blue polls which all you have to do it press the button on and someone is there to send help.

Florida State is unveiling FSU Alert, an emergency-notification system designed to coordinate ways to alert students and staff.

It would take a life-threatening situation -- from a gunman to a tornado -- to trigger the sirens sprinkled throughout the densely populated Tallahassee campus of nearly 50,000 students, Perry said.

But the sirens can't be heard inside some buildings, so the system follows up with more alerts through text messages, e-mails and radio bulletins that describe the threat and tell people what to do.

In light of the recent tragic events at the university in northern Illinois and at Union University in Tennessee, I know that our hearts go out to all the people affected by these horrific occurrences.

Speaking as a mom of a new freshman this fall at FSU, I am so glad that FSU is continuing to make strides in the safety of their campus.

On our campus tour they emphasized safety and security features. I don't recall any other college we've visited going in to so much detail. Certainly it impressed this mom and was one reason why I really liked FSU.

It depends where you go. On the strip and what not it's pretty safe. There's always cops everywhere and there is still blue lights off campus (around the apartment areas). If you go on the outskirts of Tallahassee it gets a little rough but you'd have to drive a bit to get out there. There's really no reason to go out that far unless you're taken there like I was lol

Ok. Thinking about the area around FSU scares me. Scared thinking my daughter could be there without her parents close by. Now this big brawl on campus yesterday and Im really starting to think FSU is not to safe.

I feel safe. It's really a comfort zone deal. I went to UF this past weekend and was so.. disappointed.. to only see ONE blue light. I really wish I was kidding. I was walking through the union when most of the fraternities were out and it gets crazy on Wednesdays because of Market Wednesdays (basically a flea market). It takes some adjusting to not have the parents there, but if she made friends, then most people "travel" in a group. There's so many people that the chances of something like what happened in the Union happen to your daughter almost not possible. There was apparently history behind that "brawl." The strip has so many cops that I can't even begin to tell you. If she were to go on the way outskirts of town (for whatever reason, I really have no idea), then you'll see some rough areas, but that's way away from the actual heart of the Campus and it's surroundings.

I grew up in South FLA but moved to a small town on the Florida panhandle in 1999. My daughter is not very street smart and where we live is nothing like Tallahassee. FSU is only 180 miles away but daddy would still worry about his little girl. I don't like the area surrounding FSU, it's ugly and lots of strange characters around. Now there is a brawl and two males and two FEMALES are injured. If thats where she decides to go, I'll have to be suportive but not without worries.

Both my daughters are enrolled at Florida State and, frankly as a parent, I will always worry about them. They are now at 5 years total time on campus and are doing fine. Neither was particularly "street smart"; but they have learned to take care of themselves as they should. They are now adults.

Navarre1:
Which campus are you considering that you think is safe enough for your daughter?
Bad things can happen anywhere especially in our current economy. Students need to remain vigilant using common sense to avoid situations where they would be more likely to end up a victim of crime.

Navarre1, are you comparing Tallahassee to Navarre (one of my old stomping grounds)? Seriously, I honestly think Tally is safe. I have a son so I probably have a bit less of a worry, I suppose. But he's not a jock and isn't street smart at all. He's a classical musician from a Chicago suburb. Basically oblivious to the outside world unless it involves music. But I am so relieved he has applied to FSU and feel Tally as the safest area to which he has applied.

Now if you were speaking of Miami or Philadelphia, then I'd say you should worry!! But Tallahassee? Nothing to worry about, imo.
