I'm sorry I had to post this here but I've asked this question elsewhere and I never got any replies.

Nobody visits the FAMU forum on this website either.

Here's the deal.
I come from a poor family, and we're a foreign minority, too.

FSU offered me no scholarships, but I can qualify for 100% Bright Futures.

FAMU on the other hand offered me a full scholarship, every single damn thing paid.

For FSU, Do you think I would have a hard time keeping my grades up to retain 100% Bright Futures while trying to earn enough money to pay for my room, books, and my food?

Are internships or job opportunities readily available or is it impossible to get a job?

For FAMU, would you recommend going there (NOT comparing with FSU, just in general)? Do you think alot of job opportunities will be available for me if I went to FAMU?

I don't know what I want to major in yet so I'm not talking about any specific programs

In general, I’d say get the best education for the least cost - assuming your alternatives are fairly equivalent, like FSU and UF for example. In the case of FAMU, however, it has recently had a series of serious financial problems and at least some issues with retaining accreditation. FAMU’s graduation rate was also around 36% last time I checked.

I would therefore suggest you attend FSU and apply for work-study programs, work as an RA in the dorm and secure some student loans if needed. Take longer to graduate if you must, but get the best education for your invested dollar. Yes, you’ll likely work much harder at Florida State, but isn’t it worth it?

Being poor and a foreign-born minority member is not an insurmountable impediment to a good education if you apply yourself and do what is needed to succeed. You may win scholarships and fellowships later.

Considering FAMU is less selective, isnt the fact that they have such a low graduation rate a good thing- only the good students actually graduate?

I’m actually in a program where, if I pass these upcoming exams, I’ll have tons of college credit and could probably get an undergrad degree in 2 years. shouldnt i just get that for free then go to FSU or wherever?

about the FAFSA, I’m in the middle of that at the moment. My dad has to fill out his part and he’s taking his sweet time.

At the moment I do favor going to FSU, if I had to choose.

However I am worried that I will have to take out loans (Something I really want to avoid- I do not like borrowing money). I’m worried that, if I go to FSU, it would be difficult to find work considering I’d be competing with alot of other college students in need… Aren’t there at least 3 colleges in that area- FSU, FAMU, TCC?

My main concern is whether I’ll be able to get some kind of work- whether it be an internship, work-study, or a job, or whatever, so that I can pay for books and food, at least.

For the FSU students, how hard is it to find work there?

There’s a good amount of work around the Tallahassee area - the school has a department that will work with you to find a job if need be (plus, there are work-study programs).

I personally recommend FSU over FAMU, just because it’s generally tenfold more respected and the payoff after graduation would probably be considerably more substantial (i.e. you’d have better job opportunities, potentially scholarship offers to graduate schools, etc.).

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions! I’m a first-year student at FSU.
