FSU and UF join forces again in Stand-up for Our Students

We are asking each of you to show public support for Governor Crist's new comprehensive approach to improve the quality of education for the more than 300,000 students enrolled in our public universities. These reforms will strengthen Florida's universities now and for decades to come by establishing clear lines of governance at the individual institution and the state level -- and by balancing universities' financial needs with affordability for families. The result will be stronger Florida universities that prepare graduates for the increasingly global marketplace.

This reform will allow universities to:

* increase tuition up to 15% each year
* provide $5 million in need-based aid in the first year alone
* offer courses needed for graduation
* maintain quality for existing students
* provide access to new students
* retain and recruit professors

A good thing to support!

"... and by balancing universities' financial needs with affordability for families."

okay.. how can they do that when they say..

"... increase tuition up to 15% each year"
"will cost approximately $12 more per credit hour for nearly 70% of the UF and FSU students who receive a Bright Futures scholarship"

I don't know about the wealth of other families, but if I don't get good-enough financial aid, I won't be a Seminole. I want to know how increasing tuition makes a university more affordable.

I'm not trying to diss it, I know they put alot of thought into it.. Maybe I'm too stupid to notice, but how is this not just a plan to give universities more state-funded $ and allow them to charge more tuition?

Many Americans are struggling financially. Increasing tuition 15% a year is a horrible idea.

I sincerely understand the situation (and have decades of savings and now student loans for two kids to show it) but for Florida to have the two flagship schools better compete nationally it takes more money. FSU and UF are among the cheapest major universities in the U.S.

Both are a great deal for a university education.
