I was just wondering which university has the best theater and musical theater programs. FSU or UF?

There is at least one thread about this somewhere out there....on the main board I think...

off the top of my head it's FSU, but batman is right

Humm...I can't seem to find it. Maybe that was another forum...I know I preferred FSU by far. That seemed to be the general consensus wherever that discussion was also but it all depends on what you are looking for. FSU is a really great school.

Actually, it's in the thread just below this one in FSU- Questions for FSU Accepted student....

Even as a representative from the FSU program, I wouldn't make that kind of a judgement call. I feel strongly that we are very good at what we do, but we might be "the best" for some but not others. Visit programs, talk to students and faculty about the strengths and weaknesses of each program and find out which is better for you.

Additionally, when a lot of us made our decisions of FSU v UF, it was at least a year ago, possibly longer. When I decided to go FSU, UF's program was still new and growing. It may have become stronger in certain areas than when I last visited. I know they just renovated their mainstage theatre. It looked nice.

In MY opinion, if you were to show up to an audition in NY and they asked you where you were trained/went to school and you'd say "Oh.. UF." They'd most likely go "..Uhh.. alright.. That's a new one" but to say you were from FSU they'd most likely have heard of you. It's a pretty highly regarded program in the MT world (no as much so as CMU or UMich, but you get the idea).

Just my opinion.
I've never even HEARD UF in any college theatre discussion ANYwhere.

You're much much better off with FSU
Or even UCF for that matter.

I see that no one has posted on this thread in a while, and last spring my D and I went to UF on a tour and we have some more recent opinions.

The program is fabulous. The facilities are current, has there own stagecraft and costume rooms and also a Black Box. This is our first school of choice for MT programs, FSU is second only because they are even more selective than UF.

However, to get into the University is harder, 4.2 is the average GPA. So if you are really smart and tested very well and your talented you might get chosen to be in this program. They also only admit around 3-4 students and some of those might be transfers.

Florida State is historically strong in the arts. UF is much more an ag school.

Sorry Parent2noles, what does ag school mean?

Ag= agricultural school

UF used to be called Florida Agricultural College.

Interesting Fact: It is also Florida’s Land Grant College. --Future student affairs professional :)

FAMU is also a land-grant school in Florida. :)
