Rod, if you were entering as a freshman I would be worried. But given the brighter outlook on the budget in the last few days, and given that you are coming in as other than a freshman, I think you will be OK. If you are a junior, they are already telling juniors and seniors as of next year NOT to worry, they will be able to finish with their degrees if anything happens.

sunnyflorida, I feel like it would defeat the purpose to attend a University that will know longer support my major because of the lack of motivation and resources that will slowly begin to go away as students of that major graduate. And when will the budget finally be announced? I read the other day that the legislature of Fl will be extending their session. oo and thanks sophiegirl ill see what my mapping coordinator says.

ROD: environmental studies is under geography, which is under social sciences.
so, i’d call robbin hand.
she is really helpful!

so does anyone know where & when the final budget will be released to the public?

The final vote is Friday, 72 hours after final budget agreed upon. When are the actual line item figures released? I don’t know.

do you know when we will hear of the specific programs being cut?

Expect merges, not cuts.

oh sweet! =}

Nothing is safe from cuts if funding isn’t available:

[Despite a state budget that would boost funding slightly for higher education, the University of Florida still is expecting to make significant cuts. | Gainesville.com | The Gainesville Sun | Gainesville, FL](http://www.gainesville.com/article/20090506/ARTICLES/905061007/1002/NEWS01?Title=UF-still-plans-deep-cuts-despite-state-budget)

FSU has been cutting the budget over the last 18-24 mos aggressively in anticipation of bedget problems. They also dropped freshman enrollment way ahead of UF. UF is just now bracing for cuts that FSU already made. So with the budget to be signed Friday, I think FSU will be better able to handle what happens over UF. UF is just now making changes to deal with the economy and the downturn. The hiring freeze and restrictions on travel must be a reference to what FSU already instituted last year.

It appears to me that the merges FSU will be making will be to streamline and improve performance. There also will likely be a refocus to a more STEM orientation.

Under the circumstances it appears FSU was handed lemons and made lemonade. ;)

Now that we know the state budget, when will FSU announce what it plans to do? I know I keep asking its just that I want to know before I pay for orientation and sign my lease.

This is about all we know regarding the education details of the budget. I am sure over the next few weeks we will hear of FSU’s long term plans. The stimulus plan will help for only two years, so I am sure that the powers to be at FSU do not feel they have dodged a bullet. Rather, the bullet delivery will just be delayed. I doubt there will be any immediate announcements about long term plans.

THIS IS NOT GOOD. The overall budget for the state was not cut. But the budget now includes two new medical schools and a new campus in Lakeland for the state as a whole. FSU STILL LOST BIG TIME. THIS IS NOT GOOD.

This is ridiculous. Why do they wait until now to decide all of this. As a transfer going to FSU in the fall I am embarrassed and ashamed to be living in a state that is conducting itself in this manner. When it comes to education, you NEVER hear people saying that Florida is a great place to get an education and now with this I think the impression is just going to get worse. I am working very hard to keep my grades good and attend a good university but if a student has to be worrying about whether their program will last another year is irresponsible and shameful. So with everyone saying that the affordability of state schools is a good reason to attend them, would it not be better to take out a loan and attend a stable private university?

Rod, You’ll be okay. FSU isn’t going to just let you hang out to dry. Just show up next fall, I’m sure they will have programs of study that meet your interests and needs. Things aren’t any better at private colleges, they are tight for money too. Call the depts. up at FSU you are interested in for latest news.

Florida is short of two things right now: money and water. You should consider studying hydrology or a specialty like hydrological engineering. It’s geology and earth science related. Job prospects are great for future in water-starved Florida. Thirsty folks will spend their last dollar for a glass of water!

Its not just Florida universities, its all state colleges. budgets are extremely tight and applications are through the roof.

it will get better in time.

Harvard is closing the library at the Quad, cutting the shuttle from the Quad to the Yard, and dealing with cutbacks. MIT is dropping a number of sports. Budgets cuts are hitting even the Ivies. No one is immune.
