Our household is getting very excited for decision day!
Has anyone seen this article yet?
Interesting article. In our OOS neck of the woods, I often get questions when I tell them I have a son at FSU. I think Iāll get a lot less of those type of questions going forward.
According to Hege Ferguson, director of admissions for Florida State University, as of January 7, 2022, they have received 67,291 first-year applications for summer and fall semesters. That is a 21.2% increase compared to January 7, 2021, when they had received 55,500 applications.
UT-Austin had 66,077 applications last year so now FSU will be very close to this much larger state flagship if not higher since FSUās final admissions deadline is March 1. Itās also interesting to see that FSU gets more apps than UF. My son applied to both FSU and UF due to value and rising rankings. By the time he would graduate from FSU, will the reputation catch up and present very strong employment opportunities?
What do you mean about the reputation catching up? It already has a very strong reputation. Donāt put too much stock in rankings. What really matters is your own studentās major, department, etc. Employment opportunities will largely be about what he does while in college, not just where he goes.
I hear you. I donāt see much clarity on student outcomes by major. While my son wants to do real estate finance, and itās a top 5 national program, I donāt know if he would have opportunities with real estate private equity firms, selling residential real estate or doing selling software for multi-unit living complexes. With a #55 national ranking, FSU is now on par with U of Miami and Santa Clara and one notch below Purdue and Villanova. OSU is also at #55 and it doesnāt have the national gravitas that #59 Washington has and is probably more on par with FSU.
The value equation is also huge for FSU and Iāve heard that the campus and people are great. If my son is admitted or gets Seminole Pathways, weāll go check it out in more depth. The Florida schools have done a great job of moving up the rankings and I suspect that has a lot to do with value and its support services to graduate students of all income levels.
I am hopeful that what one does in college, internships, networking, career center, etc. will open doors. I agree FSU has a strong reputation. I recommend visiting if you can! I thought FSU had a very welcoming, upbeat atmosphere. We loved the campus, the tour, and the people we met last summer. We stayed in College Town. (BTW-there is a very loud club thereā¦Just FYI if/when you choose a hotel!)
If my son gets accepted (only 7 days to decision day!), we hope to visit again to see what itās truly like when students are on campus. I have been very impressed with the responsiveness of the faculty and admissions counselors when weāve had questions. And, youāre right, you canāt beat the value. Even OOS!
We did not see UF. We are from Western PA and we had planned to, but after visiting FSU my son said he had seen enough schools to narrow his application list. (So we spent a few days in Panama City Beach insteadā¦)
Interesting that you get questions! Are you far from FSU?
We are from Western PA, so my area would probably ask why my son wants to go to one of Pittās ACC rivals! (He was also accepted at Pitt, but maybe a little too close to home and doesnāt have exactly what heās looking for)
How does your son like it? Any insider information about the area you can recommend?
Weāre from NY. My DS is a sophomore at FSU. Visited a lot of the Florida schools when he was looking but fell in love with FSU. He is extremely happy there. My DD22 has applied but not sure she wants to be at same school as her brother. Trying to convince her that itās too good of a school at a great price to pass up!!! Finger crossed. Good luck to all applying.
@bonniep , We are in Louisiana. Most here think of FSU as a football school that is no better than LSU, academically, so wonder why anyone would pay more to go out of state. They have no idea that FSU is so much stronger than LSU in most disciplines, and much less expensive for high stats kids. My son is a Benacquisto recipient (before it was restricted to in state) and Presidential Scholar so his full COA is paid, and FSU is one of the best at his major (music). He loves it there, and made a strong group of friends through the honors dorm and program, his Presidential cohort and the music school. Only insider info I can really think of is to visit the school (itās quite pretty) and if your student decides to attend make sure to book hotel rooms for Parents Weekend, big football weekends, etcā¦Hotel rooms are ridiculous there. The FSU Parentās FB page is a good resource as well.
I think I recognize a few of you from the FSU Prospective Parents group on social media! I hope you get great news next week. Itās such an exciting time!
My daughter is a third year student (first semester senior) at FSU. Sheās in the honors program, and is a philosophy and literature major. My son is a junior in high school and hopes to study physics at FSU in a few years. We just love FSU!!
Trying not to get too excited but love hearing all these positive experiences. DD is OOS with high GPA but very low test scores so I donāt think its very likely for her.
We are OOS from Texas (Houston area). Iām an Aggie and my husband is a āNole. We love both schools, but I gotta tell ya, the same 2026 thread for Tamu is 4000+ comments long. The admissions process is a show, for lack of a better term . The way Tamu communicates acceptances, who they accept, etc. - no rhyme or reason a lot of the times. It leaves the kids and parents in angst. I like how FSU gives a date for acceptances.
My S22 is accepted to A&M too. It may just come down to a choice between the two. Both great schools.
Wow. Eye-opening numbers. DS applied oos & for grandparent waiver(took a shot) at both FSU & UF.
My sister and BIL are graduates and still live in Tallahassee about 15 minutes away. Based on past years, if he gets in he might get FSU waiver anyways w 4.0 uw/4.64 w and 1550. That oos # makes me nervous.
The application numbers last year may not have been accurately reported as there were thousands of applications without test scores. Although FSU may have not openly state this, these applications lacking test scores were not considered for admission. The actual pool of applicants was smaller. Not sure if all the applications they received this year have SAT/ACT scores attached. FSU is a fairly competitive admit but certainly not impossible.
@vistajay Wow - your son is a Presidential Scholar! That is amazing. Congratulations! Glad to hear he is having a great experience at FSU and thanks for the information. My son applied for honors, so hoping for good news next week all around. I will check out the facebook group!
I hear the alumni network is strong for FSU! Thatās fun that your family still lives in the area. Yes, I am nervous about those numbers, tooā¦hoping for the OOS waiver as well for my son.
@NoVaMom73 Hang in there - hoping for good news for your daughter next week!
Yes, the alumni network is strong, and Tallahassee is a great town with lots of good people. We are OOS, but have long standing ties to both Tally and FSU. Hoping for good news next week. It has been so different this time around without EA decisions that we had 5 years ago.
