I just saw that FSU has pushed back the housing contract until January 22nd. I'm very glad because I still have no idea where I want to live! I was wondering if anybody had advice for an incoming freshman... Which dorms are close to the gym and places to eat? Should I look into suite style rooms as well? Are there any halls I should avoid at all costs?
Basically any information you can share will help!

Even with them pushing the date back, you have until May 1 to finalize your choices anyway. The main point of filling out the FSU housing contract for freshmen early is to get a very good priority number, which increases your chances of getting into one of your top hall choices.

No buildings are near the gym and dining halls. Reynolds, Landis, Jennie Murphree (females only for Fall/Spring), Broward, Bryan, Gilchrist, Dorman, and Deviney are located close to the Suwannee Room dining facility, but not near the gym.
Wildwood is located near the gym, but not either dining hall.
Salley, Smith, and Kellum are located close to the Fresh Food dining hall, but not really close to the gym.
DeGraff is located near the student union’s food options, but not at all close to the gym or either dining facility.

Personally, I lived in Wildwood my freshman year, and loved it. The location was very centralized- about 10 minutes to food, to my classes, the union, etc. And it is literally across the street from the Student Life Cinema and about 3 minutes from Doak. My roommate had lived in Gilchrist that summer, and loved it. And I have friends that have lived in Salley and generally liked it, and a friend that is an RA in DeGraff that loves it, too.

Depending on what your financial situation is, I’d say that first, get your application in. Put whatever 4 choices down that will just get you to fill out the application. I remember changing my choices multiple times before finally settling on my top 4. Then if you can afford it, I personally like the suite-style dorms more than community style.

If I waited until February 8 to apply what are my chances of housing? Does it really fill up that fast? Still waiting for UF’s decision.

Never attended FSU, but my younger sister does and I can assure you that on campus housing @ FSU is very limited and always fills up immediately. It’s your choice.

More than likely (it’ll depend on how many people actually apply for housing, and how many returning residents there are, etc), you’ll still be able to get a spot in housing. Will it be one of the popular dorms? Highly unlikely.

There normally was something like 750-1000 applicants for housing on the first day that it opened up when it opened the day acceptance decisions were released. I remember a friend applying our year on the second day and getting a priority number of like 1200. My priority number on the first day (granted, this was now 4 years ago), was almost 600, and I applied in the morning.

You’ll get housing, unless for some bizarre reason a significantly higher number of people apply than I’ve ever seen before. With a priority number of around 7000, you’re still often able to get on-campus housing, and I know that the numbers don’t get that high until around mid-March.

Disagree with Pasbal …
if you wait until after UFL announces and apply for FSU housing around March you will wind up with a high priority number and your dorm of choice will most likely be Deviney or Dorman or Kellum or Smith which in my opinion are not dorms but rather prison cells with an FSU insignia stuck on the side of the wall.

How is that disagreeing with Pasbal? You’re saying the same thing. You’ll get housing in one of the less popular dorms. You’re both saying the same thing. And Pasbal’s numbers are right by the way.

Yeah, I don’t get that one either, janna.

OP, [as I have previously posted on this forum](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/15229315-post8.html) FSU Housing is easily broken down as such:

As you can see, unless by some odd stroke of extreme misfortune, a person with a housing priority number of around 5000 is still pretty much guaranteed on-campus housing.

However, I do want to stress one point: No one really can say for sure what day the cutoff will be reached for any specific dorm this year. Housing completely changed the application process when they pushed it back a month from decision date. What used to start sometimes before the decisions were released in December was pretty predictable. With this new system, I’m sure even the Housing people don’t know what to expect (it honestly seems like they never know, really).

My best advice is that if you’re anywhere near set on going to FSU, that you end up applying for housing within the first day or two. No one really knows what to expect. There could be a rush to apply that’s worse than anything Housing ever had when it opened the application in December. There could be a slow, but steady trickle of people applying, and you could get a really low priority number a couple days in. Unfortunately, no one knows either way.

And finally, ignore ilovethe47. As you might have realized from his posts in just this thread (not to mention his posts elsewhere), he’s just a pathetic UF ■■■■■.

Thanks… I think I’ll brave it out until feb 8. I have confidence in uf but fsu would be my 2nd choice so just wanted to make sure

Odds are that you will either end up in Salley, which is generally regarded as the least preferable suite-style dorm (mostly because of the setup, with the bedrooms being tiny and the study area not being all that large either), or one of the community-style dorms if you wait that long.

Personally, I expect around 1000 applications to be submitted the first day, if not more. There usually were around that many submitted on the first day of housing applications when it opened on the first decision day, and it’s a month later now, when there generally would already be a couple thousand applications in.

Kid is at school. I am stuck doing this online app. Anyone able to log on yet?

Yes, I was able to sign in about 8.40 and have priority #47. It was a little bit of a wait between screens, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Right at 9am the system really started slowing down.

I decided to go ahead & submit the housing app but its completely down right now…

On a side note its ridiculous that apartment housing isn’t available to freshmen… Another reason I’m praying to get in to UF!!

Started at 8:45. Now can’t get past page 6. It wont save. Ugh!!!

No problem submitting besides slow loading between pages.

Will a priority number of 460 be enough to get me into Landis?

Got a number of 486… Honors student. Should be good enough for Landis, if I decide to go, right?

Hang in there, I started at 8:30. Screen changed like 8:45. But my Internet provider sucked so I changed computers. Logged in at 8:50 got number at 9:22. Number 315. Okay for a not computer person, with poor Internet service and horrible computer. Now I gotta toto work.

Did you ever get a won’t save error?

Can’t get past the save error. starting over:(

Update: got through with a new app at 10:02 Number is just under 1000.
