James Ammons, the candidate with Florida A&M University roots, was hired on Thursday to be the 10th and next president of FAMU.

The board of trustees' vote was 7-6, with Ammons, North Carolina Central University chancellor, edging out Thelma Thompson, president of University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The vote followed a full day of trustees quizzing the finalists, including Howard Johnson, University of North Texas provost.
