FSU Honors College Dorm?

I was accepted into FSU’s honor program and am really excited about it! I know it’s recommended that Honors students live in Landis, but how important do you think it is to live in this particular hall? I found a roommate I really like but she isn’t in Honors, so should I room with her in another hall or is Landis that much better that I should live there? My contract number is 3857, so do you think I will get a crappy dorm if I decide to not live in Landis? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

I can’t fully answer your question (wondering the same thing myself on behalf of my son), but I can say that with your number, it’s possible Landis will already be filled by the time you get to choose a room. (not definitely, but possibly) I’ve heard that Gilchrist, which is adjoining (and attached) to Landis, is where they put overflow students from Honors if there isn’t enough room in Landis. Because Gilchrist isn’t specifically reserved for Honors Only, the way Landis is, maybe you and the roommate will be able to live in Gilchrist, and you’ll still be with at least a partial Honors population with strong connection to Landis.

Since FSU has two relatively new dorms (Dorman & Deviney, rebuilt in 2015), and two brand new ones ready to come online in Fall 2017 (Magnolia and Azalea), I think those might fill up first, leaving more room in dorms like Landis and Gilchrist. In any case you’ll know for sure once it’s your turn to choose a room, because you’ll be able to see if there’s space left in Landis and/or Gilchrist. (Maybe Gilchrist is a better plan if you really want to be with this roommate)

Also remember that not everyone with a number better than you will go to FSU. Some will choose other schools, and your number might end up being quite a bit better than where you are now.

I hope someone will comment on their opinion of Landis generally.

Good luck!

My daughter lived in Landis last year, and she was very happy with it. The location is great and her hall was quiet. It sounds like the size of the rooms varies quite a bit though, i thought her room was very small. She said some of her friends living in Landis had much bigger rooms. I think when they retrofitted the buildings to remove the large common bathrooms and install bathrooms between the rooms, they lost space. Gilchrist is definitely connected, by a nice indoor passageway, so it is almost like living in Landis. I have since visited many colleges and seen many rooms, and i think that hers was average, but the location is wonderful, and living with other honors students seems like a benefit.
