FSU Insurance Alternative?

Hello all. I finally got my answer from FSU after 6 months of waiting :) and happily I was accepted.

My problem is that I need insurance.

I cannot get enrolled in my mother's insurance as enrolling period passed. I am trying to find the most affordable option that will allow me to pass FSU's requirements. The amount of deductible does not matter.

I am wondering if someone found something more affordable out there? ( I cannot afford the FSU insurance)

I just want to satisfy FSU's requirement, I do not mind high deductibles

Please let me know?

Thank you!!

Things might have changed recently, but the health insurance plan I am on- the Florida Blue (Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida’s new name) Health Options 700 plan- is almost identical to the FSU plan. The only difference is that it costs only like 1/2 of what the FSU plan costs, although like clockwork every year on June 15 I’ve gotten a notice of a rate increase that takes effect August 1. This coming year it’s going to cost $105/month for the plan.

This is also the cheapest plan I’ve ever found that didn’t have a sky-high deductible, and even most of those were more expensive. Some didn’t even seem to met FSU’s requirements.

If your mother has not already checked with her benefits administrator on whether you can be added to hers outside of open enrollment, she should. If there was a qualifying life event, i.e. you lost other coverage, etc. then you should be able to join her plan outside of open enrollment. Additionally, some of the new insurance mandates are making it easier to be added to insurance policies. Just a thought.

Even if you can’t join her policy until open enrollment (which has always been Oct/Nov in my family’s policies), you can always just get a temporary policy. I think BCBS has monthly and other short terms alternatives until your Mom can add you. First thing for you to do is to find out when the enrollment period is for her policy.
