TK - tell your folks to use priceline to get their hotel room. They can secure a really nice room for you all through priceline for around $50 per night.

Although both your parents may want to attend the orientation - it is an exhausting 2 day experience that really only one needs to attend. It is greatly beneficial for them, but one can take notes as easily as two attending.

It does seem that there is one significant change to orientation. The students are now required to stay in the Wildwood dorm for orientation. Previously it was optional to stay in the dorm and they used the Salley dorm.

That's a good change.

Yes, Wildwood seems a bit of an "upgrade!"

TK, I got a hotel room in priceline for $50 also. Here is how it works. You use the Priceline option you have to bid on, and it is nonrefundable. You select a 2 1/2 star hotel (that is as good as it gets in Tally) and you bid $50 and you do have to put in a credit card (and the transaction is nonrefundable.) But there are only 3 2 1/2 star hotels that participate in Priceline, and we have stayed at 2 of them and they are all pretty comparable. The one that everyone seems to be getting for the $50 is the new Marriott Residence Inn on Gaines just about 2-3 blocks from the stadium. While you don't want to venture south of it walking too far, it really is just on the outskirts of campus, one can walk to campus, and for $50 with a kitchen to fix meals in, it is a great deal. It will be $100 total for two nights. And with the kitchen, the meals not covered by the "meal plan" for family can be made in the room.

Remember that with depoits, it does get applied to actual bills later, so that if you have Bright Futures, you will end up with money in your accout to eventually reimburse you.

I know, it's money out of packet right now. Hang in there. Did you apply for outside scholarships? Our HS gave out a packet of great local and regional scholarships, with a list of some national ones also. There is money out there. While my D may not be eligible from a need standpoint, we assisted a good friend in getting the forms/applications, essays, resumes ready. It took about three Sundays of work, but for her friend, a first generation college student-to-be, with a single parent household and a mom working as a plant tech, it will pay off I am sure. Get cranking on applications. It is still not too late.

One additional note about the Marriott Residence Inn...

We learned our last time staying there (game against NC State) that they will actually go grocery shopping for you if you call ahead and give them a list - no extra charge. That way - you don't have to spend a ton of money eating out.

They also have a wonderful breakfast in the morning with waffles, eggs, sausage, bacon, etc.

If any of you happen to stay there on a game day - you can walk to the stadium easily and you'll have free parking :-)

FSU seems to be adding all kinds of tiny new fees. I noticed on my son's bill for Spring that they added a $5 per semester term fee for the FSUCARD. They also increased the transportation fee by 50 cents per credit (understandable with the price of gas these days).
