FSU Med does well in budget - despite cutbacks statewide

FSU's College of Medicine has done very well and is still hiring despite cutbacks elsewhere in the budget passed by the Florida Legislature.

The medical school is scheduled to begin the 2009-10 school year with a $48.2 million budget, up from the $45.4 million it had for the past school year.

Created in 2000 as a separate line item in the State University System budget, FSU’s College of Medicine is not yet at 100 percent capacity.

Seventy-three students are scheduled to graduate on Saturday, while the incoming class will have 120 students. That will put the college at full-strength for its first-, second- and third-year classes. The fourth-year class has about 95 students.

This is why the university-wide hiring freeze does not apply to the medical school, as it continues to hire additional faculty.
