Immokalee is a small agricultural town that has a significant migrant population. FSU wants to put a medical center there, as this is consistent with the directive to address medically underserved populations by the FSU med school.

The Florida Legislature approved $4M for the center this year, which is being supplemented by donations generated locally within the town. This funding was vetoed by the governor of Florida. The goal is that if trained in certain locations medical doctors would then stay, at least for a while, to address the needs of the local population.

Here's an article about the matter: http://www.newszap.com/articles/2006/06/21/fl/immokalee/ib01.txt

While most of us on this board are fairly well off, and worried about sending our kids to the best schools, there is a large population of folks who have virtually no access to medical care, even minimal access. For me, I'd suggest this was a worthy $4M expenditure. And, just to be clear, I ain't no bleeding heart liberal, but people are people after all.
