FSU MT: What are my chances?

Hi! I am currently enrolled in a University outside of the U.S. (I’m a US resident) and studying linguistics but I would love to transfer to FSU: School of Theatre. I don’t like what I am studying now and I’ve always been very passionate about being onstage, singing, acting, dancing, etc. My experience is:

  • I’ve participated (acted, sang & danced) in three High School Theatre productions.
  • I’ve written two musical theatre librettos (which I also directed)
  • I am a pretty good singer and have participated in various pop-rock bands
  • I have been part of various choirs

The only part where I feel that I am not very prepared is in dancing. I know I have talent but, I don’t have a lot of experience. I’ve never been en pointe or attended a dance audition, etc. I want to know: what are my chances of being accepted? Am I required to have advanced knowledge in dancing? How “advanced” is the audition? It is very important for me to know because I don’t want to end up studying I don’t like again and, like I said, being on stage and performing is my passion.

Thank you for you help!

Here at FSU today with my daughter. 40 students or so here today. This is one of three auditions. They do not go to Unifieds. Taking talent and type out of the equation, your chances are low. Or putting that in a positive way, they are the same ridiculous low odds any young girl would have. About 30 of the 40 students here are girls. Assuming that is the same each audition day, they will be seeing 90 girls total. According to Gayle and Michelle, they will offer 6 or 7 girls spots here in order to yield a net of 4 or 5, after a few turn them down for other programs. So your chances statistically, if you passed the pre-screen, are about 8%.

Also, they said that dancing was just information to them. It would neither make or break your chances if you had zero dance training or 15 years of class.

Assuming you are a “Latina”, I would think that would improve your odds at most schools since there seems to be an unspoken drive to make MT classes more diverse.

Do your thing and see what happens. But audition for multiple programs so not all your eggs are in one basket.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, I believe the odds are actually a little greater. I think they have three audition weekends - with two different sets of students on each Saturday and Sunday. Closer to 240 students called back, I believe.

Usually there are 240 audition slots (6 audition days with 40 students at each) for Music Theatre. That includes both the BM Music Theatre and BFA Music Theatre students. My son is a freshman so I can give you numbers for Class of 2020. They accepted 15 (8 boys and 7 girls) of which 10 are attending (5 boys and 5 girls). 2 of the boys are transfers from within FSU. I don’t recall how many prescreens they received that they chose the 240 from.
