FSU or UF?

Visited both of these colleges recently and have been accepted to both. Based on the "fun" factor of both of these schools I would have to say FSU wins hands-down.....Tallahassee seems like a better place to live than Gainesville. Anyways, I'm doing a dual-major in Industrial Engineering and Economics. Which of these schools offers a better program? Most of the discussions I've had with people were limited to liberal arts; but not many know much about these schools' engineering programs. I've heard people say FSU is not strong in the hard sciences.....but I've also heard much more about their engineering department. It's all very contradictory; anyone have a good, unbiased opinion on this?

Well, US News puts UF's engineering program tied for 39th nationally, UCF's is tied for 111th, and FSU's doesn't even make the list.

In terms of the college compared to entire nation, UF is ranked 50th and FSU is ranked 111th.

In terms of national public universities, UF is 16th and FSU is 54th.

82% of FSU students graduate with debt, with the average debt being $18,579. 42% of UF students graduate with debt, with the average debt being $13,744.

UF has a graduation rate of 77%. FSU's is 63%.

Finally, UF is more prestigious than FSU in terms of the impact the name on your diploma will have.

My opinion: go to UF.

I think the academic muscle of UF is pretty clearly superior to FSU. So the question is how strongly you prefer FSU and whether you could get equally excited about a college experience at UF. If you really think you won't have a good time there, then it wouldn't be crazy to go with FSU, but I'd advise you to talk to some more UF students before you make up your mind about how much less fun you'll have. (It's not like UF is Bob Jones U or something; it's got a thriving Greek system and party scene, too.)

^^^I agree. 40,000 college students don't just sit around studying...

Put thousand of young people together....at any school....and there WILL be fun, parties, intellectual conversations, mischief, drinking, Xboxing, romance, laughter, tears....yes, there will be lots of "life" and life's experiences. So, any school will offer these. UF, however, does have the better academic reputation, offers more programs (and course choices), and attracts some of the best gradaute students (that is, your TAs will be coming from better undergraduate schools, in general). FSU, however, is still a very good school and has some excellent programs.

Good news is you'll do fine regradless of which school you pick:)
