therell, meanwhile, presented a decidedly upbeat picture of his alma mater, even though FSU will begin the upcoming school year with $82 million less in state revenue than it had at the start of 2007-08.

"FSU is now ranked one of the nation's premier public research graduate universities in every publication you can find," Wetherell said.

He proudly listed many of FSU's recent accomplishments, including the best graduation rate in the nation for African-Americans.

He noted that every member of the incoming freshman class will have an impressive 4.0 weighted grade point average and an average SAT score of 1,400.

"That's an awfully bright class," Wetherell said. "Not many universities in the nation has that bright a class."

It's unlikely FSU's incoming class is in fact as accomplished academically as Wetherell touted it to be. According to John Barnhill, who supervises admissions at FSU, not every freshmen will have had a 4.0 high school GPA.

"That's a little bit of an exaggeration, though many, many, many will have it," he said.

I hope he is just lying, because if it is true, then it is bad news for me. I applied with a 3.6 W (academic classes) and an 1190 SAT and 28 ACT :-(

Wetherell was exaggerating:
Barnhill (head of admission) said the middle 50 percentile scores for the traditional two-part SAT is between 1,150 and 1,310; for the new three-part exam it’s between 1,700 and 1,930.

TK wouldn’t purposely lie about something like freshmen scores and grades. He probably just got worked up talking to the Rotary group about the school he so proud of, rounding up the scores. TK is a politician; politicians tend to puff and talk about things with flourish.

So p2n…let me get this right. You berated Machen for “academic dishonesty” by giving his subjective opinion for US News PA rankings to FSU and UF (3 and 5, respectively)…an opinion he was perfectly entitled to give…yet when TK misstates objective incoming class data in a public forum (1400 SAT) it is OK?

Not the same situation, rogracer. Machen was [properly excoriated by the editorial board of the St. Pete Times](http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/editorials/article1011155.ece) for gross prejudice, supposedly made in secret and uncorrected in contemporaneous public fashion by him or anyone on his staff. Obviously, TK was boasting and in the same article, quite unlike Machen’s secret deed, a staffer injected some reality into the boasting.

Sure… T.K. would never exaggerate his PA score rankings…he is clearly a man in comand of the facts…but I guess we will never know because he never produced it.

ok, maybe the “■■■■■” label was a little harsh. Apologies to rogracer and gfg. I just had a feeling the gator cavalry would be on their way once I read the 1st post.

Anyway, TK was obviously exaggerating and didn’t know what he was talking about, yet again. Still, you can’t compare this to purposely manipulating the rankings like Machen did.
