Hey, I'm going for it, and I was wondering who else is going for it, too. If so, what are your achievements? (Just so I can compare myself to assess my own chances) And does anyone how roughly how many people apply per year? I know it's competitive.
Thanks!!

I looked at the people who have won it in past years. It's ridiculous, so I declined to try for it.

I'm going to try for it too. I have no idea if I am competitive applicant though, all the previous winners accomplishments were wild! Some of my main community involvement are:

President and founder of a non-profit organization called Understand Me (currently in the process of getting a federal c3 non-profit status)
Chapter Director of a chapter of a non-profit organization called Love Letters: Random Cards of Kindness (an organization that creates homemade cards to be pen pals with kids with life-threatening illnesses all over the country, works with Give Kids the World and Base Camp)
Group Student Counselor for a leadership seminar called HOBY (Hugh O' Brian Youth Leadership, a sophomore from every high school in the country is invited to go to a local seminar by his or her school -> I volunteer at 3 local seminars in Florida)
Student Counsolor for MDA Camp (Muscle Dystrophy)
Officer for my school's chapter of Operation Smile.
SGA officer/Senator (IDK if that really counts though)

I've gotten at least 500-700 hours of community service (I know through the school I have about 500 but I haven't turned in all my hours yet!)

Those are my major ones, I've done can food drives, blood drives, and other stuff locally just for my school but I don't think those are major accomplishments. What have you done dramakitty?

I think they're looking for people who do 1 or 2 community service things, but devote their whole time to it.

Though, I might be wrong.

CCES @ FSU: Service Scholar Program

There is a more recent site somewhere that has the class of 08-09's service scholars on it, too, though.

I am not really sure if they want people who do one or two major things - my major things are the two non-profits - one that I am creating and one that I am a chapter director of. The first question on the applications asks for the 5 most significant service activities that you participated in, so that's why I listed about 5 major ones up there.

Most of my responses center on the two non-profits as they are the things I spend the most time on other than work, Cross country and school itself .

Also hilsa, I noticed some of your posts on WFU and VU board. Those are my top 2 schools as well, so maybe I'll see there or FSU! :)

Oh, well then if it asks for 5, then maybe they want people who do everything. =]

VU and WFU are your top 2 schools too!? That's REALLY awesome. Maybe I'll meet you someday, if we go to the same school. I just wish Vanderbilt wasn't ridiculously hard to get into nowadays. Though, I would be happy with WFU since I love beauty and grass. Hehe.

Or FSU, since it has a great chemistry and film program.

What are you planning on majoring in?

Ditto that. I wish I could've ED on Vanderbilt or something...but due to finances that would have been a bad move. But then again, I just read on the Vanderbilt website that they have ELIMINATED student loans from all financial packages...so, hopefully Vanderbilt would be doable considering my EFC is 0 and I need all the need-based aid/merit-aid that I can get!

About majors, if I end up at VU, I'll probably due pre-med/pre-law combined using the Medicine, Health, and Society interdisciplinary major. I'm thinking of getting my MD/JD combined in either Georgetown or UChicago cause they offer such a program.

If I don't end up at VU, I wanna do Neuroscience/Philosophy double major which would fit perfectly with pre-med/pre-law.

Ditto on how hard those schools are lately! I'm a little more comfortable with WFU because it's a bit less competitive to get in, but for Vandy...ugh, man I feel like my stats are borderline average to below-average. Hopefully being 1st generation and URM might help, but I have no idea.

I was going to apply to Vandy ED too, except I'm poor too [though my EFC is 9,000 so you win the "who needs more financial aid" competition]!

Neuroscience/Philosophy IS the perfect thing for pre-med/pre-law. Is there one you prefer more, medicine or law?

I'm almost 1st generation, except my mom got her BA at the University of South Florida [which is saying nothing]. What kind of URM are you?

Probably law. I really interested in international law - specifically advocating for Human Rights and Crimes Against Humanity. I would like to work with the UN.

Yeah, but with 9000 EFC, we both would be eligible for A LOT of aid. Hopefully we both will get in, but if not, I am perfectly content with FSU.

My parents are refugees from Afghanistan, neither of them finished high school back home due to the Soviet invasion in the 70s/80s. At first I wasn't sure I was going to be classified as an URM but when I contacted a couple admission officers from the schools I was applying, most of them said that if I selected "Other" in the Race section of the Commonapp and specified Afghanistan, then they would put into context where I was from during my application review. I am not really sure if that counts as an URM, but the admission lady in WFU especially said that my background would definitely help me in admissions and in merit-based scholarships because they are trying to "diversify" their class.

I actually was taken aback that she said that my ethnic background would help me in my chances for merit-based aid because I really don't think one's race should be considered for MERIT scholarship, unless the scholarship was specifically set up for individuals in particular racial/ethnic background.

Yes, I think WF has scholarships specifically for minorities. As for the other universities, I'm not sure. I bet your parents being from Afghanistan will definitely help.

Working for the UN is a great goal. I commend you on that. =]

Thanks hilsa :)
Actually, I wanna do my MD/JD combined to work with Doctors Without Borders to treat people in 3rd world countries and then help advocate for them as a liaison with the UN.

What do you wanna do? Film and Chemistry is an interesting mix of majors.

I want to be a pharmacist. Not as admirable as yours, but I still help people in a smaller way. And I want to be a film critic as a sidejob/hobby. Film is my life. As of right now, I'm watching a rerun of the Critics Choice Awards on VH1. AND THE GOLDEN GLOBES ARE TONIGHT! So stoaked for that.

UN? Doctors Without Borders? Yeesh. You should already win this service scholarship, since you seem to care a hell of a lot.

EEEEKS lol I"m not going to win. At all. I tutor little kids with reading after school and used to volunteer at a nursing home and was in a play that raised money to fix a leaky church roof, and volunteered for FL Special olympics and a local day care and did TA work for my former english teacher for free. I applied to be a peer counselor. But I never started my own organization or spent 1,000+ hours on one thing.

*%! lol

You guys sound ambitious, isn't VU ridiculously expensive?
I went to be either a prosecutor or possibly a human rights lawyer, or a shrink, or an English prof. Still figuring it out. Whatever I do I will write and act on the side.

Has anyone heard from this yet? On their confirmation email, they said we will know our decisions by the 24th...I don't know if they release both the rejections and acceptances at 24th. Or do they notify finalists beforehand and the people who didn't get in will be notified either tomorrow or Tuesday?

I still haven't been notified if I got in or not so I emailed them to see what's up. Has anybody been notified yet? It might be that there's a large volume of applicants this year, but I really don't know.

Well, I got notified today and I didn't get invited as a Service Scholar. Congratulations on anyone on this board who has gotten it! :)

congrats for having the guts for trying... my 170 hours wouldn't hold a chance... lol
