FSU shows High-performance Computing Cluster

Florida State University has long been at the forefront of computational research, and new high-performance technology is ushering in a whole new level of problem solving.

"Our new High Performance Computing Cluster really represents a substantial level of improvement over the capacity of the previous system, which was already recognized among the world's most powerful university-based supercomputing facilities. It's twice as powerful," says Jim Wilgenbusch, associate director for computing at FSU's School of Computational Science. Along with director SCS Max Gunzburger and a host of FSU faculty, Wilgenbusch opened the facility in September.

The new technology will provide multidisciplinary research programs throughout the university with the infrastructure needed to compete in innovative research areas. The Dell-based system supports the university's Pathways of Excellence initiative, with its emphasis on interdisciplinary research.

The new high-performance computers will allow for study on a host of cutting-edge research topics like weather predictions and climate modeling.
