The center is designed to foster collaboration between researchers at Florida State University, the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Combined the four universities produce approximately 60 percent of Florida’s undergraduate degrees in engineering and 80 percent of the state’s winners of graduate degrees in the field.

The center will be based in Tallahassee primarily because Florida State University will be the lead institution. Kirby Kemper, vice president for research at FSU, said the center stemmed from an idea to come together and become a clearinghouse and point-of-contact for future work in the industry.

“No one place could have all the facilities you need to do all the development together,” Kemper said Wednesday afternoon. “You want to train aerospace engineering here, at UCF, at UF, at Embry-Riddle or at FIT, (and) you can come to me with a problem and we have all the expertise needed to solve any problem in aerospace.”
