From the Tallahassee Democrat:

The Florida State University Board of Trustees will consider giving some out-of-state students a break in fees, in an attempt to lure more of them and in turn raise revenue.

The board this morning will consider waiving up to 50 percent of out-of-state fees, which would lower the total tuition and fees students not from Florida pay from about $18,000 to $12,000, Anne Blakenship, assistant vice president for academic affairs, told a committee.

Students from outside of Florida pay an out-of-state fee in addition to regular tuition, and the waiver would go to children of FSU alumni if approved. Though the out-of-state students would get a break in fees, they would still pay considerably more than in-state students.

Waiving half of the out-of-state fee would make FSU more competitive with universities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts with what those institutions charge students who live in those states, Blakenship said.
