I really want to go away for college. I have recently been accepted to UCF for fall of 2012 but I really want to attend FSU....waiting for December 14th!!

My mom and I have run the numbers, and we're still not sure if I will be able to afford it. I will be receiving the Florida Academic Scholars award which covers $101 per credit hour and I also have Florida pre-paid WITHOUT local fee or tuition differential, I do not have a dorm plan.

I have researched and discovered that is pointless to purchase a meal plan so I will not be doing that. I am hoping to be able to live in the cheapest dorm at $2,150 a semester in order to save some money.

I'm willing to take out the $5,500 loan but it would be great if I didn't have to take out quite that much.

My main point is will FSU give me grants or scholarships? Here's my stats.

*household income ~80,000
*GPA - 4.2
*SAT - 560M, 560R, 620W 1740 total
*ACT - 31E, 27M, 29R, 25S 28 total

Do I stand a chance at receiving financial need based or merit based scholarships? FSU preferably, but I am not completely against UCF if it saves a lot of money.

Any input will help. Thanks.

I doubt that you’d get anything but a loan from FSU and maybe some work study. Your stats aren’t high enough for merit and your EFC will be too high for federal grants.

UF and FSU seem to rely on Bright Futures to provide most of the “merit awards”.

Can you clarify all that you’d get from your post.

It sounds like you’d get about $3k per year from the Florida scholars (is that Bright Futures? If not, will you get BF?)

How much will you get for your pre-paid? Won’t that cover most of tuition (about $5k per year)? If not, how much will it cover?

I think you will have to take out that loan. Will your parents be giving you anything out of their current income? Will they provide for groceries if you don’t get a meal plan?

FSU
In-state tuition and fees: $5,825
Room and board: $8,900
Books and supplies: $1,000

How much can you earn over the summer? You could earn book money and pocket money can’t you?

Yes, the Florida Scholars is the same as Bright Futures. It covers $3030 a year. Pre-paid covers $103 per credit hour.

My tuition should be entirely covered with, I believe about $600 a year leftover.

I’m not certain, but I think without a meal plan room and board would be brought down $4,000 … I’ve heard that the meal plans aren’t really worth it.

I would like to get a job on campus to help cover groceries and incidentals.

Read the website to make sure you can skip the meal plan. Some colleges require a meal plan for freshmen and women.
