I've narrowed this list down between FSU and UCSB for the area of my major (international relations/east asian business/ global studies). But I still can't decide if the 200k+ debt incurred from being out of state at a UC school is worth it. I live in Florida and have 100% bright futures scholarship and several other scholarships rendering my cost of attendance at less than free.

My parents are concerned with the reputation and the seriousness of a degree from FSU, and my ability to get into a good grad/law/business school from both. I am concerned with having to fork over 50k a year for a public school degree...

are the UC's worth it? Should I go to FSU or UCSB

No, only Berkeley and UCLA would be worth it and even then I’m not sure.

Go to FSU, enroll in their Honors program, and do your absolute best. You’ll graduate college with no debt, which is just fabulous in my opinion. You’ll probably get into a good graduate school or law school as long as you continue to do as well as you’re doing now.

and is it possible to establish residency for tuition purposes if i acquire property there(in california) and my dad (whom i don’t live with)is a native of there, but is a diplomat overseas?

No undergraduate degree on the planet is even worth half this much debt.

Only you and your parents can determine whether or not a UC at $14k/yr is a better deal than FSU for free. Can they pay for that out of current income? Would they pay it with parent loans? Would you pay part of it with student loans, and part with summer jobs?

Right now, I’d advise you to go to FSU. Do well in your classes. Get to know your professors so that when it comes time to ask for letters of reference for grad school some of them will be more than happy to write those letters for you. In the end grad/law/business schools are more interested in your GPA and your LORs than they are in the name on your diploma.
