My daughter has applied to both FSU and uf, she's hoping to get invited to each school's honors program. What are the differences between the two? I believe the uf program is only 2 years, same for FSU? Hume Hall at Florida is much newer than Landis, any idea how they compare? FSU has the Honors Medical Scholars Program (she's considering medical field) does UF offer a similar program? Which program would you find preferable, and why?

They are very similar. Painfully so, in fact. They offer the same advantages, early registration (which is one reason you may want to join the program, even if you don’t plan on completing it, at least for the first 2 years), unique scholarships, smaller honor classes” undergrad research, travel abroad, etc. UF’s honor dorms are nicer, but pricey. UF doesn’t have the pre-med/pre-law versions.

If you complete both programs, you get an “honors program completed” note added to your official transcripts and you get awarded an Honors Medallion at graduation. Requirements to earn this is a bit different for both schools. They both require you earn “honor points”, FSU wants a senior thesis (for the Honors in the Major Program), while UF requires that you graduate with honors (at least Cum Laude).

Both programs are worth the effort, if you are willing to put in the time and take advantage of what they offer. If you’re not willing to work with the advisors, compete for the scholarships/research opportunities, attend the seminars, and keep up with the extra work, then you should avoid it (or at least plan on dropping out after a year or two…early registration as a freshman is nice).
