FSU vs UF vs UM

OK people applying to the top schools of florida… what do you think? Florida State, University of Florida, or University of Miami? which one is the best you think? I’ve already applied to UM, and will apply to either FSU or UF, not both…

They are all good schools. Just depends on what you want.

omg those are my top 3 schools!! im doing ED to miami ( still havent heard back though), second is to UF and then FSU

i did ED to UF, but didn't get accepted =( however i did get accepted to FSU and that is where i'm going to go! =)

Your question is too general...all have strong programs in some areas. UF is the strongest overall.

FSU has a great if slightly impersonal music program, but if you were doing music you'd probably already know that. :)

Beyond that I have no idea about any of them.

I think UF and UM are about equal, while FSU is just slightly behind, as far as the US News & World Report rankings go.

Of course, it all depends on what you want to study. I applied EA to Miami, but haven't heard back yet.

alright i live in florida and UF by far has the best reputation. its the most competitive and more and more kids are not getting in. Miami is next but its really not THAT difficult...FSU is definately the easiest to get into and is just as much a party school as UF but lacks the good reputation...UF is a win win

not true, uf and um have same reputation, just depends who do you talk to... fsu is behind, true. UF is rebuking students because more students apply there than um why? because it is 10 times cheaper but both of them are at the top of the list as far a florida schools go

dpiderit - maybe that's true in Florida, but UM doesn't have much of a reputation in the Midwest or Pennsylvania and UF does. That's all I can say for sure.

No offense kirst but you are in Gainesville, FL (that's what your location says), how would you know what pennsylvanians know about uf or um??? I have this little hunch that you are a little biased since you live in the home town of UF but I don't know for sure...

If you are a Florida resident and you don't care about the money, UM is the best school all around. It has a strong Chemistry, Medicine program, the school is well balanced in term of academy, race (latina, latina), and the location (south Beach) just make it the best in Florida. It doesn't mean that you going to get the best bang for your buck. If you looking for that UF is the best, the instate fees are cheap, strong academy, strong sports, fine chicks, gainsville is ok. Florida student might not even have to pay a dime, if they have a good H.S. record (Bright Future Scholarship, and all that). How about getting a free ride where some of the money will even end up in your pocket? Oh yeah... FSU in the other hand is a good school too but it is considered as a safety because it is so easy to get in.
If Vanderbilt reject me, a Gator is what i will be.

Um, hello - I don't LIVE in Florida, I go to school here. I grew up in Pennsylvania and went to middle school and high school near Detroit, Michigan. Besides, most of the kids who live in Gainesville would probably be biased AGAINST UF rather than toward it because there is a perception that UF is too tough on local applicants or something.

Yes, UM has a fine pre-med program. FSU has a fine music program. But UF still has the best academics overall, IMO. The cost factor is an added bonus...a big one...for in-state students vs. UM. But UM is quite generous with its merit-based scholarship program on the other hand.

By the way, I am a recruiter for a major aerospace company and we have a list of preferred schools from which we draw talent...and UF is the only Florida school on the list.

Still, a perspective student should look at the strengths of the programs in which they are interested, as all the schools offer good choices in some areas. Generalizations often serve little purpose in discussions like this.

There is no perception in Gainesville that UF is hard on locals. I am a highschooler in Gainesville and in the IB program at my school, which has about 150 students per grade, the only two people who got rejected last year were kids who didn't fill out their apps correctly. UF however, is viewed as a much better school than FSU. FSU is known as the school for Florida kids who didn't get into U of F. UM isn't considered as good as UF (of course this part may be a Gainesville bias) but is considered above FSU. If you look at the student statistics, UF is above the other two in GPA and SAT.

rogracer: i might attend UF or Embry if i got rejected by Vanderbilt (yeah it might happen). Can you give me some info about the company that you are recruiting for because i'm intersted in Astronomy as well as Aerospace engineering.

Afroed...sorry, I'd rather keep that confidential, but you can make a good guess if you look at my location. We don't hire astronomers, though...but we do hire aerospace engineers. Vandy is a good choice, incidentally. I don't consider it any better than UF, but it has well-respected programs for sure. Embry-Riddle, though, is generally considered more for it's aeronautical programs....people that want to fly planes rather than people that want to design and building them.
